As you pause your cursor over each style, Capture One freezes

For how long does it become unresponsive? I have a similar issue, but usually it's just the on the first mouse-over after Capture One has been launched.

    See this request.

For me too, it's the first mouse-over after launching Capture One, but it can last a very long time. On a day-to-day basis, it's a big waste of time, and in front of the client it's very annoying.

Sometimes it crashes and I have to force close Capture One and restart.

Here it's usually around 30 seconds, but it seems to vary depending on the specific style.

I'll add a reference to this post on the request page I linked to above.

    Thank you Thomas.
I hope an update will fix this problem!

Having had issues with Capture One becoming unresponsive regularly with insignificant actions such as switching tool tabs, I made a new, very small catalogue (75 images) for testing. With this catalogue I see no unresponsiveness; this goes for hovering over styles too.

If you're still having this issue, may I ask how large are the catalogues you use?

I do not have these problems with my 65,000+ image catalogue. Hovering over styles and moving the mouse from style to style is instantaneous without any delays.

I am running Capture One (16.2.5.9) on a Mac Studio M2 Ultra with 128 GB RAM with OS 14 (Sonoma). I have not run anything that modifies the system, except Bit Defender. I used to customize a lot of things when I used Microsoft XP on a "PC" and had problems with conflicts, but since going to Mac I do not interpose other 3rd party enhancements, other than Bit Defender. It is possible that 3rd party enhancements, including virus checkers, could cause odd problems short of a crash with other software. This may or may not apply to your problems. If it does, I think it would show up in the system or Capture One logs and be amenable to analysis by the support team.

Thanks for your reply, Jerry C.

I noticed that this only happens with third-party styles, with the built-in styles there's no unresponsiveness.

I'll make some tests as soon as I have time. I don't use any anti-virus software, but I have a few other third-party applications running in the background. As far as I remember, I've had the same issues when starting up in safe mode, which should have prevented any third-party software from running in the background.

I just tried starting up in safe mode again, and I see exactly the same unresponsiveness the first and second time I hover over a third-party style (after the first and second time there's no unresponsiveness, unless I open a different catalogue). So it seems unlikely that the issue is caused by any third-party software running in the background.

I've sent the support team all the documentation I could think of – log files, catalogues, etc. – but I never got any information out of them as to possible causes, except that Capture One wasn't optimized for large catalogues. I've looked through log files myself too, as well as at the Console application while running Capture One, but without any luck.

You mention having worked with the support team previously.  That infers you have a support ticket number.  Have you tried responding to that ticket confirmation email? (I believe it includes something like "reply above this line for followup".) If you don't have the ticket number, I suggest opening a second ticket.  I think this issue is likely above the pay grade of community members here.

That said, your specific issue seems to be with 3rd party styles.  All 3rd party styles?  All from a particular provider?  Just a few here and there?  I, too, had an issue with styles from a particular provider.  Started after they re-worked their styles for layers.  I've reached out to them several times but they don't seem to care to address the issue.  I can't very well fault Capture One for issues in how a 3rd party structures an add-on and whether those add-ons are actually compatible with Capture One.  So, I filed those styles in the ol' trash can and moved on.

    Thanks for your reply.

My exchanges with the support team about this issue go back more than a year. I've replied to them countless times and sent them all the data and documentation I could think of. The little information I've got from them – which, unfortunately, isn't very much – I've had to drag out of them.

As for third-party styles being the issue, I doubt that this is the case as I've had no such issues with small catalogues, only with larger catalogues. All the issues I've had with unresponsiveness – not only with styles, also just with insignificant actions such as switching tool tabs – have been with larger catalogues. But I'll check with other third-party styles as soon as I have a chance.

It might indeed be a good idea to remove all third-party or even C1 additional styles and try your 65k catalog again. Maybe it has an impact on the other unresponsiveness issues you encountered, not only when hovering over styles.

It's only recently I started using styles at all, and I've had the general issues with unresponsiveness much longer, so the cause must be something else. I'll need to check how Capture One behaves with other third-party styles. I'm away for a few days, I will check as soon as I'm home again.

I've tried installing a few other third-party styles, and apparently it's only the RNI styles that cause unresponsiveness. Has anyone else here used styles from this company?

I've written to ask if this is an issue they're familiar with.

Good to know. Did you get any response from them about the issue or didn't they reply at all?

No response after multiple inquiries. If you try and have a different result, please let me know. I really did like some of their styles.

I'm not a frequent styles user but the responses in this thread piqued some technical interest and I ended up looking at the RNI website.

I note there are 2 distinct products -  4 and 5  - and that, for Capture One, there are some observations about the differences between them and which can or cannot be used with layers, for example.

Have you all already assessed this and not found any connection to the problem styles?

I also wonder if they have versions (of, presumably, 4) that were not updated to match the revisions to some tools (or replacement of some tool versions) a few C1 versions back.

I assume their "5" product, since it works with ICC profiles, may have some other issues. Presumably it would need to replace the core camera profile in the Base Characteristics tool - so I would be interested to know how they try to achieve that as a "style".  It sounds more like something one sees in connection with the Fuji Film Simulations.

The style set causing lag for me is v 5. I don’t have the v 4 so can’t test.

    Thomas, thanks.

    I have version 5 too.

The other third-party styles I've tried haven't included .icc files; this could very well be the reason why they don't cause any unresponsiveness.

I got a reply from RNI. They've tested with a computer identical to mine (MacBook Pro M1 Max 64GB) and don't see the issue (though they didn't say how large a catalogue they were using). This and the fact that I only see the issue with larger catalogues seems to indicate that the issue is with Capture One, so I've filed a support request.

Did you see the issue with small catalogues too?

I would have liked to test with other third-party styles containing .icc files, but I haven't been able to find any.

Thomas, I’ve only used their styles in my large catalog. Later this afternoon I’ll create a catalog with a few hundred and a few thousand images and see what performance looks like. Will post back this evening.

I'm looking forward to hearing how it goes. As mentioned above, I've had no issues with unresponsiveness when using a catalogue containing 75 images.

Did you have a chance to test with a larger catalogue yet?

Another user pointed me to a site that has a few free sets of styles that include .icc files (see this topic). I've found that Capture One behaves exactly the same with these styles, i.e. it becomes unresponsive with larger catalogues, but not with smaller catalogues. So it looks very much like the issue is with Capture One's handling of styles that rely on .icc files, and not with styles from RNI.

Thomas Kyhn Thomas, first off I apologize.  I'd previously deleted the RNI plugins and had to do the download/reinstall/build test catalog thing.  Somewhere in there I let this thread get back-burnered then forgotten.

    So, here's what I did:

    • I created a new catalog and added files to it.  Files and catalog located on external Samsung T7.  Appropriate data cable.  MacBook Pro M1 16.

    • RNI Styles tested:
    • Ilford Delta 100 @100% (Fujifilm) - testend against Fuji files only
    • Ilford Delta 100 @100% (Standard) - tested against Sony files only
    • Poloroid 690 Muted @100% (Standard) - tested against both Fuji and Sony files

    • Step 1 add 2 files.  1 Sony and 1 Fuji.
    • Test rollover time
    • Step 1 add additional 98 files mixed Sony and Fuji
    • Test rollover time
    • Step 2 add approx 1200 files mixed Sony and Fuji
    • Test rollover time

Thomas, in every instance I noted a practically instantaneous update of the preview.  Some of the files I tested had only a base image layer while others had multiple edit layers.  In every case the preview update was practically instantaneous.  No discernible difference in preview update time vs built-in styles.

I then went back to my Archive catalog with 30,000+ images and the lag is definitely there.

I can't explain what's happening.  Small catalogs seem to show no issues.  Yet when I test against my large (by my standards) Archive catalog, there is definite lag - to the point of my not using the RNI styles against that catalog. Is this an issue introduced only against large catalogs?  If so, why only RNI?  I'm more confused than before.

If you have additional ideas, please do let me know and I'll take a look.

    Thanks for checking!

As mentioned above, I tried installing a different set of styles based on .icc files (available here under "Free stuff"), and Capture One behaved the same with these styles as with the styles from RNI. So presumably the issue is with Capture One's handling of the .costyle/.icc file combination.

NB. If you want to try these styles, note that the online installation guide is missing a step; all three steps can be found on the last page of the readme file (pdf) that comes with styles.

I've been having the same issues. Just the previews for the styles take a very long time to load, and sometimes makes it look like it crashed. At times I lose control for several minutes.
I have the same issues when choose pre-set curve adjustments.

I've been in contact with support for a while about Capture One becoming unresponsive when hovering over .icc-based styles. They say they haven't been able to reproduce the issue. I'd like to know what they're doing in order not to reproduce it so that I can do it too.
