Background/Subject masks and gradient masking

So Im trying to get my head around the logic of Subject/Background masks and gradient masking. Seems like there should be a way to apply a gradient to a background mask which only affects the background, but I can't seem to figure it out. Is this possible to do?

    You could 

    • draw a gradient mask in the old-fashioned way
    • rasterise it
    • apply the AI eraser to the subject you don't want to be masked.
