Thanks very much, especially for taking the time to help with a detailed answer. I haven't used Capture One in some time, and I was rather surprised that this information isn't readily available if I upgrade the license.

My understanding is that if you buy a perpetual license now, the features you will get will be those that are in the product the day you buy it. You will get some bug fix releases, perhaps support for some new camera models and lenses, but not major new features.

You will get some bug fix releases

Unless you happen to buy 16.3.2 and they decide the next release is 16.4.0. Then you get 0 bug fixes.

C1 could however use feature flags, allowing the user to install newer versions while disabling new features that were introduced after the active perpetual license date of purchase.

Alternatively, they could use feature tags. This allows you to safely patch bugs in pre-existing functionality and also release this patch for older releases. Say in 16.3.2 you patch a bug affecting a feature introduced (and tagged) 16.2.3, you can then also release patch 16.2.7 (since we already have 16.2.6)

TL:DR: They could still support and patch older versions, but it appears they don't want to spend any effort supporting perpetual license holders and have a full focus on subscription (always latest) users.

C1 could however use feature flags

I proposed this in the community a while ago too, with unlimited (perpetual) bug fixes for the features you have had with the version you licensed, but it was discussed to death because some people thought it is not possible. And in some rare cases it isn't easily possible, in which case product management could decide to be generous and grant permission for a new sub feature or a revamped feature with more functionality for ease of coding. Of course a mix of feature flags and a fixed one or two year from purchase bug fix policy could be a compromise. But realistically, though feasible, it probably won't happen due to their urge to make us subscribe.

Everything is better than we have now, which is total uncertainty.

I've also mentioned that 6 months period before. Actually I believe software should (at least) receive a year's worth of support including bugfixes. Since they seem so set on limiting the right to new features, I discussed 2 options that would make that possible while still providing a year (or two) of bugfixes.

If that is too much effort -and I think it is for them- then indeed just giving 6 months of updates (possibly including a new or enhanced feature or 2) is a nice compromise.

Some time back I suggested a reasonably priced perpetual license for a basic feature version of Capture One and letting the user purchase an unlock flag for additional features. Bug fixes to the entire code would be perpetual, independent of what you purchased. Substantial upgrades to the features could require an additional purchase. How hard could it be to develop such a modular version? It would certainly quell concerns about the gotchas inherent in the current sales strategy.

As it is, anyone purchasing a perpetual license this week wonders if a big feature release might come out next week giving Black Friday Week a new meaning.

Exactly regarding Capture One Express. I think you are right about a new version with a price for upgrade coming out soon - I was being rather tongue in cheek. If Capture One keeps offering half price sales, I would be fine just waiting for one that had the features I really liked if they would keep the bug fixes for a reasonable time.
