Help with organization
Hello:
I have Windows 10 and C1 12 (and LR for a little time)
I'm moving from Lightroom to Capture one. For me, C1 given the best program I've tried so far, it's fabulous, and I'm handling its tools quite well, but I have a "problem" with the organization (I guess for so many years using the LR catalog) that it's making me lose a lot time doing tests and searching the internet, that is, I need help because I have some doubts:
I need to be able to search for a photo within all my photos, so it is best to have a only one catalog with all my photos and not several catalogs since I would have to do a search for each one (for example, look for photos of pelican or granite).
Is it possible to have, for example, 100,000 photos in a catalog?
In LR the development I keep in xmp. In the catalog of C1 that I put in the preferences? I do not see the xmp with the settings in the folder of the photos. Where are the retouches that I make a month later? Can I do in C1 the same as in LR, that is, save the development of the photos in xmp and update them with each modification?
I also work with a laptop, what do I do? I create a session on a pendrive to reveal on the laptop? And then how do I sabe the development to the catalog? What does import? The .cos file? I replace photos in the catalog for photos with the imported revealed of the session?
In short, I need a single catalog for searches (I have many photos of plants, birds, rocks, insects, mammals, ... for my work, and, say, the personal and "artistic" photos, and can reveal on PC and laptop and that the development is saved in each photos folder.
I look forward to your response because I want to leave LR and have all my photos in C1.
Thank you very much for your help and sorry for my bad english.

My current catalogue is between 62 000 and 64 000. I do not see any problem with going way past that. C1 does not perform as well as LR though - there is no arguing that. If you have to do a search the whole catalogue that can be a bit slow. Searching smaller sections like smart albums for each year etc can help alot.NNN636189854976049536 wrote:

I'm not sure what you are getting at here. C1 saves our edits in its database and there are settings that control what C1 does with xmp files. What do you want to accomplish with .xmp files?NNN636189854976049536 wrote:

I start my editing in a session as well. My work flow is to create a session and do the initial import, rating, keywording and culling in the session. Then I some some basic edits and then import the session into the catalogue. I do that by using the catalogue import a session command and just point to the session file. After that don't make changes using the session any more. I just started doing some of that work on my notebook and in that case I do my work on the session on the notebook and once done copy the session to my image drive and do the import from there. This seems to be working OK.0 -
Thank you very much IanL, you have clarified many things to me, and it is the work flow that I had thought. I'm not sure what you are getting at here. C1 saves our edits in its database and there are settings that control what C1 does with xmp files. What do you want to accomplish with .xmp files?
Regarding this, in LR when the photos are in the catalog, all the editing of a photo is saved in a .xmp file (I have it set up like this). In C1, when importing the session (edited in the laptop) to the catalog, a new folder called CaptureOne appears in the photos folder, which has two other folders, "Cache" and "Settings120" (with editing settings made in the laptop). Then, if you edit the photo in the catalog, I understand that the new settings are saved in the catalog file itself ("Capture One Catolog"), but not in the .xmp files or in the folders imported from sesssion? It can be configured in the preferences of the program (arhivo -> preferences -> metadata)?
Thanks for your help. Gracias

Where Capture One stores the information about edits depends on whether you are working in a session or a catalog.
In a session
A Capture One folder is created as a subfolder to wherever the image files are stored (the Capture folder, the Selects folder, etc) and there are sub-subfolders for Cache (for the thumbnails and previews) and Settings120 (for the edits).
In a catalog with referenced files
The thumbnails, previews and edits are all stored inside the catalog database.
