Slightly annoying toolbar behaviour

Press short (click) to change the tool.

Or, for crop as an example, short cut key "C" to select that tool.

It is an interesting observation though and something I have not really noticed in all the time I have been using C1.

Most of the tools in the related toolbar are only offering selections of a tool or one of a "family" of tools or a certina state of a tool.

Crop, Mask, Annotations and indeed Loupe are a little different because they all offer settings functions of the same menu.

In fact Crop only offers settings.

Whether, as a generic point of consistent design philosophy, making an adjustment to a tool setting should always force the selection of that tool I am not sure. I tend to think not since the concern you have is not something that has ever irritated me or indeed something that I have ever noticed before now I think about it. However that is just a personal opinion.

It will be interesting to see what opinions others hold about your observation.

I know, if I press short, it will be selected. But why to select it twice ? If I want to crop, I often directly press the toolbar button long first to see which mode is selected or to select the one I need. I see it or select another mode, release the press and instead of continuing cropping, it returns back to another tool and I have to select it again. It should be obvious that I want to use this tool - if I press long or short. Long even more obvious ...

If I want to crop, I just press C and if I want to change or check the aspect ratio, I then right click on the image.

Interesting, thank you ... I did not know about this option.

One more thing (unless I am again missing something). When the crop is done, in Lightroom I just press enter and see the result. Here I have to select another tool to see the crop finished. Or ?

Yes there is no need to "commit" to the crop by pressing enter or anything like that. You just move on to other tools (and you can come back to the crop at any time to change it.)

There are some settings in the "Preferences" that allow you to finesse the way the crop tool displays what you are doing with it. You may find that some adjustments there are more you your liking than the default settings - or it may simply be a case of becoming used to a different approach from that which is familiar to you.

I found the crop functionality a little unusual to start with but quickly worked out where it differed from what I was already using and decided that I preferred the C1 approach once I was attuned to it.

    HTH.

Where in preferences I can set that the crop result is seen immediately or without a necessity to select another tool ?

Maybe you can set the outside region color to match the background of the application?

You can't. But do you want just to stay with the crop tool anyway? If you wanted to press Enter to set the crop result that would be one key press. At present you also need just one key press - I usually press H to go back to the hand tool, but you could press V to go to the Select tool. Or if you would prefer to use the mouse to click an Apply button you can with the same single click go to another tool. And if you don't want to leave the crop tool after you "apply" the crop, how do you propose to re-visit the crop setting if you want to?

This and/or the opacity applied to the area outside the crop.

To simple switch between uncropped and cropped views - H for the "hand" tool (for example) will show the cropped result at maximum viewer size then C for the Crop tool will put you back into cropping mode with the whole original image area available in the Viewer screen subject to whatever zoom level you have set at that moment.
