Assuming you are in a "session"...

Mark the folders as a favourite (right click -> add to favourites)
This indexes contents for Smart albums (another name for virtual collections - think of them as harvesting together images based on set rules. They look for favourites to search and match your criteria)
Favourite all the folders you want to include in the album
Now click on ALL images Smart album and you will see all images from all favourites.
You can make other Smart Albums to search by other criteria if you want.

    Hope that helps

This also assumes you don't have a bunch of folders in the capture folder which is also included in the "All Images" Smart Album - which should be named All Favorites to be fair.

Why its not possible to simply click on a folder and command click another folder to display contents of both folders I really don't know. I also don't now why its not possible to click on a folder and display the contents of child folder as well.

Having to create a system, smart or not, just to effectively compare a few images who's location is already know is tedious and anti workflow to say the least.
