Help newbie to reorganise storage options
I have been using Capture One 12 for only a little time now with my first attempts at post-processing of my Sony ARWs. I started with the free Sony Express, bought a Sony 12 Pro licence and now have the associated free upgrade to version 20.
Whilst going through this initial process the physical organisation of my photos has become a little chaotic and I now wish to “start from scratch†basing storage on a newly installed hard drive.
What is the best way to do this?
Thanks
Paul

Are you asking what organizational setup do people use on their HD? Or are you asking how to move files from their old location to their new one? 0 -
Hi Ian.
Advice on each of these fronts would be helpful - or indeed where to look for such advice. Currently I have raws held in date ordered folders. Not sure where I should best place exported images.
I do not really understand how C1's internal indexing mechanism is maintained. Consequently how do you move and/or delete stuff so C1's "internal indexes" and the referenced files remain in sync.
Does this make sense?

To keep everything already in a Capture One catalogue in step with the catalogue database move things using Capture One facilities.
The Capture One Catalogue Database does not actually care how you set up the folder structure or where you save the files BUT once you have imported something and it is known in the catalogue database it is best to use Capture One if you want to move it rather than some system file management or another pplication.
That way C1 automatically knows where you have moved it to.
If you are forced to change things outside C1 for some reason you would need to use the catalogue "Locate" facility to update the Database with the the new location details. So you would locate the file(s) at the new location and C1 would update the links accordingly.
How you might choose to organise your folders, as seen through Windows Explorer for example, is up to you and possibly influenced by any other applications you may also be using. Others here may have some suggestions for you on their preferred approach to that but Capture One really does not care at all.

Grant has answered one aspect of your question. Here is my description of how I organize my photos.
I have a drive with three top level folders: Capture One, Pictures, Produced
Capture One holds the catalogue. If I were to create more than one for what ever reason they would go here too.
Produced holds my produced (via recipes) images. Some things I keep around for a while others get deleted once they are zipped up and delivered to the customer. This is temporary stuff since my catalogue holds the single version of the truth I don't care about produced files if I need to get them back I can just go back to the catalogue and re create them. I never ever re-import output into my catalogue. It gets delivered and then archived or deleted depending on my need.
Pictures holds my raw files. My directory structure consists of top level folders for years. Under each year is a dated folder with a meaningful name under each of those are RAW files but lately it is a C1 session that was imported (more on that below).

That way if I am just browsing around in the file system I have some idea of what I am looking at (just for sanity) but normally I only look for images using C1.
Lately I have been using C1 sessions configured in a specific way to stream line my work flow. I have fully described that here [The Capture One forum has migrated to a new platform, as a result all links to Capture One related postsstopped working and have been removed] . So, some of those folders have sub folders Capture, Trash, Output from the session but I try to clear the trash before that and I *never* output from a session so there is nothing in the Output folder - out put stays out of the catalogue and only goes in the Produced folder structure.
Back ups. In addition I have two back up drives which are mirrors of the above drive. I backup regularly to one that is on my desk. The other backup is offsite and every now and then I swap backup drives and repeat.0 -
Brilliant. Your answers have been extremely informative. Once I have a chance to progress matters I'll post if I have any further queries.
Thanks Paul0
