Import: images v. variants and previews
Pardon my ignorance, and if this has already been addressed elsewhere, happy if you point me there, but I couldn't find an answer.
When I import from the SD card, the little popup shows the number of images, variants and previews - invariably the number of images is larger than the other two - last import: 72 images, 60 variants, 60 images. Am I losing 12 images? Or is something else going on that I just don't understand.
Many thanks.

Have you taken a look at the card to see what is on it and how that might match (or fail to match) to the numbers reported?
What are the file types?

OK, today I took 33 shots (counted them on the camera), in RAW, which generated 33 previews and 33 variants on import. BUT, it also showed during the import that C1 was processing 43 images. I checked the SD card, and there were 3 AVIN*.* and 1 PRV*.* files on the card, which I'm guessing are some kind of informational files. But that still only gets me to 37, not 43.
This isn't a huge issue, since (thank you) I've confirmed that I'm at least importing all my shots.
But I am curious - if you, or anyone, knows what is going on, would love to know.
Thank you.0 -
Assuming you are reading directly from an SD or CF card are you navigating to the folder(s) that contain the images you want and making that the source or are you working from the top level of the card and ticking the "all subfolders" box?
At a guess the other files may be video files or video related.
Do you have any jpg files on the card?
Cards can have all sort of things on them. To investigate it might be easiest to look at the card and its folder structures using your normal operating system facilities.

Hi Grant,
Thanks for the continued responses. So...
Brand new, freshly formatted SD card, importing directly from it (though the same thing also happens on my other card, which I've had for awhile). No subfolders, no .jpgs and when I import, I don't tick "all subfolders." As I noted, since all my shots are coming in, am no longer concerned about losing anything, now mainly curious. I'm guessing that the camera is recording some information on the card, though assume that all EXIF data is contained in the individual images, and that C1 is doing something with it. But what?????
I guess what I'm most curious about is whether the camera is taking multiple images of some shots (though, if so, they don't show up in the folder as viewed from Windows, and I'm not doing multiple exposure HDR) and, if so, under what conditions might it do this? Or, is there additional information being saved for certain shots? In either case (if this is actually happening), it would be interesting to know when the camera decides to do this, so I could be aware when shooting under those specific conditions.
Finally, I'm guessing this doesn't occur when you iport0 -
No, I don't seem to see that but are you on Mac?
I use Windows 7 and there may be some difference in how things on the card are reported
As far as I know any information the camera wishes to pass to a processing engine is going to be in the RAW file - including a .jpg thumbnail for the image for browsing purposes pre-processing.
Any special camera feature specific features often result in a jpg only file option with nothing to attach to RAW files but I cannot be ceertain that is always the case for all new cameras.
I would guess that the camera preps a card during formatting (or maybe on first insertion) to make it ready for anything the internal processor and card writing programs might want to throw at it.
There are time when (using a session) I might edit with C1 directly on to the card - for no particular purpose other than to see quickly what is there. That would introduce additional files but not usually additional images/variants. (The same things UNLESS you have also added multiple edited versions of a file (also called variants of course) in which case you could be importing more variants than there are files on the card. That is more of an "importing from disk" thing usually. Or importing from another another session (in the case of being a session user).
