What's the reason behind EIP workflow?

Hey I am Mac but I had a reason to pack the image.
So far the only reason was to send to Support so they would have all my data settings etc.

I suppose another would be to ensure exact repeat performance if a system failed.

Thanks for your input Grant. Your observations lead me to conclude that I should keep packing the images that way.

I have really only used the EIP workflow to help Phase One to try to diagnose a bug.

I am on Mac Yosemite C1 ver 9.34. D800 Sessions usually on the desktop. Later I moved those sessions to a new location.

Work and experiment on a copy folder. I packed the NEF with all of its adjustments including masks derived from the colour editor.

After I moved the folder I again tried to open the packed EIP file in C1. I got errors loading adjustment layers. The masks disappeared. Moving the folder back into its original location did not help. I rebuilt the masks and unpacked the EIP. All is good.

I found this quote in another Subject ....Can a Session be renamed?....Quote from Ian3 "(What you must NOT do is move them using finder, because that way the adjustments won't come along too.)"

This may be the cause of my problem here.

I'm not using .eip in my daily session workflow, because it causes delays and disk reading/writing. It is actually a zip file, containing raw and sidecars. Unzip on select, save zip with changed sidecars for each and every adjustment made (watch the file time/date).

But it's very useful for sharing a raw with adjustments, store it safely, etc.

    Grant,

This surprises me. I can move my .eip files wherever I want, and any new session sees the adjustments and masks.
The same with a moved session image folder, containing plain raws and .eip files. I can move it, too. And any new session shows the adjustments previously made.
Additionally, I sync my sessions from home to mobile and back without problems.

Did you try to access it in a new session instead of the moved one?

    Hans,
Yes I did try a fresh session. I downloaded my eip back from Phase One Support.
The adjustments showed but the masks still disappeared.

It might have something to do with the masks being generated from the colour editor. CO is buggy in that I could not embed my camera profile in the output. I chose embed camera profile but I got sRGB embedded instead.

In the end I rebuilt the masks.

I've got quite some masks from color editor. I know my old .eip files are fine, but I'll keep an eye on every new one I create.

A while ago I had an issue with some missing masks. It occurred when upgrading catalogs and sessions somewhere in v9. I upgraded copies when it went wrong, and, strange enough, upgrading a new copy went fine. But I never lost an existing mask when packing as .eip.

    Hans,
You are right. Let me explain. I was not using the workflow as intended.

I downloaded my eip file and again started a new session. The masks were there until I made a change to one of the masks [without first unpacking the eip file]. The next time I opened C1 the problem started again.

I realize my mistake is that I left out an important step. I worked on the eip file . I neglected to unpack the eip before I worked on it.

I gave it a try and changed masks in some of my .eip files (not unpacked). Everything worked fine. But as I already said: I'll keep an eye on it.

    Regards,
    Hans
