Embed star rating in JPEG without export? LR/Bridge/C1 user
So I've searched around the board and it looks like the only way to keep a star rating embedded in a JPEG (the way it might when you Control+S in Lightroom) is to do an export, or at least that is the way it looked around 2016 when those threads were created/dropped.
Because of volume we are only dealing in JPEGs, consider the RAW files gone.
Has anyone, since then, found a way to get the star rating to stick without an export? Or is there a way to rewrite the files in place with the ratings?
Our workflow:
Producer makes Selects with tech in Capture One using star ratings. Shoot is handed back to the archival team. The archival team uses LR/Bridge to do keywording, etc., passes the files off to others - the star ratings (as expected because no export from C1 has been done) are gone.
What is the best work around here aside from staying in Capture One? We're dealing with people who do not have it and are familiar with LR. It seems Bridge, LR, and Photo Mechanic handle ratings without needing .xmps
Thanks

As Capture One is primarily a read-only program when it comes to all source files (JPG, TIF, RAW), you'll either need to write the ratings to the .cos files (which is what Capture One does by default) or to .xmp sidecars as well (under Preferences > Autosync sidecar XMP, or in the Metadata tool's dropdown "Sync Metadata" to do it manually), or export to new JPGs as you'd described. 0 -

Could well be. I never tried to use C1 for metadata in JPEGs. To check it out, I would simply create a new session, copy just a few of the JPEGs to that session's Capture folder and try it out. You probably did that already.NN635361589747415000UL wrote:

Are corresponding xmp files WITH ratings, still available?
Photo Mechanic will (of course) change your JPEGs in place and may very well offer several ways to "mechanize" the process if you have the XMP files ratings or if you have other means for making lists of filenames to have 1 star, 2 stars ...5 stars. I would suggest one text file listing the JPEG filenames to be rated 1 star, one text file listing the JPEG filenames to be rated 2 stars etc.0
