Observation and Question about Sharpening
Greetings from Connecticut -
I shoot with 2 cameras (both are Sony), one's a 24mp and the other is a 42mp sensor.
I was not 100% happy with my processing out of images to jpg on the 42mp camera, and then i found that the output sharpening was a little too heavy-handed in its default position. peoples' faces looked like a cracked windshield; so i dialed it back a little, and now it's fantastic. I mean impressively good!
The 24mp doesn't seem as sensitive to sharpening tolerances. So my question: am i drawing a false conclusion on the relationship between pixels and sharpening sensitivity? I really don't know what i'm talking about. I have a basic understanding of these components, and i'm curious about the differences between the 2 cameras.
Thanks in advance; and I hope i didn't draw attention to my lack of depth in this area.

All things being equal, two different resolution photos should require different sharpening settings to get the same end results. That said two different cameras are not equal. The lenses could be different. The way the images are rendered out of the different cameras will be different, the way the images are rendered in Capture One could be different. There are several variables and sharpening settings can change from image to image out of the same camera/lens. 0 -
the difference you see in sharpening is probably caused by the anti aliasing filter the 24mpx sony has one the 42mpx not. 0 -
Horseoncowboy,
Thank you. That was a very helpful response. I never made the connection regarding the AA filter.
After posting my question, i went back in and sampled images from various lenses on the A99ii versus the A9. Regardless of the lens, EVERY ONE of the overcooked images was from the A99ii. Any commonality "i think" is coming from a specific exposure value, and i'm not conscious of it; thus it was seemingly random to me.
Once the images are modified, the A99ii really overachieves. And still, I bring the A9 everywhere! I think this means that some presets for the different bodies are in order. I'm sure that will present more questions.
Again, thank you.

you also should consider that the luminance noise reduction applies sharpening to your images too !
strange, but p1 seems to make sure that we never apply not enough sharpening to our images, so they do it on the sly for us with a tool which we never think works this way....0 -
Can it be the case the 42MP images are sharpened by the user > scaled to 24MP > sharpened again, thus one time extra? 0
