Sessions are designed to be self-contained portable things. The default session structure is to have a Capture folder, a Selects folder, an Output folder and a Trash folder. You can, however, redefine some other folder as, for instance, the Selects folder, and that could be, I suppose on an external drive.

But what you are asking for is more like what is commonly done with a Catalog, with the Catalog file itself (the database) on an internal drive, but the images on an external one.

In addition to Ian's help, be aware that with a session you can always browse your system folders. This means that you can go to any folder that your computer has access to. This can be folders on external disks as well. Please note, that it is a best practice to have the session and its session db on the internal drive.
