Upgrading Sessions

In previous versions it was suggested in the release notes to upgrade to CO8 first, for older sessions of course, before upgrading to later versions.

I don’t think it was for the session itself, but for the image adjustments.

    How old are your sessions?

Consider the Session database files and the image files separately.

To be read by new versions the cosessiondb files will need to be updated to the specification of those files.

However leaving them means that they would still be usable by the C1 version that created them or later versions if you still have those available. The many older versions of the software can still be downloaded form the archive.

The individual files, when using sessions, should have their own sidecar files in the subfolders to the folder in which they reside. There may be multiple "Settings" folders if they have been edited with a number of different versions.

The current version (V20) support the image processing engine as far back as V6 (according to the What's new in V20 Webinar). So one can open a folder of V6 or later edited images in V20 and choose whether to update the processing engine to V20 or even make a revised version using some older but different processing engine should one wish to do so.

In terms of how closely an old session can be recreated there are some other settings that might be required - in the application data values as used for the C1 version of the time and the session in particular. And soe of the processing may have referenced files that were external to the session folder and may not exist any longer. But leaving that and any file storage maintenance activity that might have deleted relevant date to one side, in theory you should be able to go back some years and still work with the systems and the edits of those times.

    HTH.

I think the oldest session is from C1 Ver9.

So bottom line, what is the best way to preserve upgradeability of sessions and engines if there are dozens of sessions going back several years? I.E., what if I want to re-edit an older image with the latest engine? Re-ingest the original images and start from scratch? When I only had a few sessions it was easy to just upgrade them all, but now I have dozens and the process is getting to be daunting. Couldn't there be a bulk upgrade process?

I would just open the old session with the latest C1, the Session DB file will need to be updated but the images can be left as they are using the old engine or updated either when you do something with them or in bulk if you wish.

I would not normally go with the bulk upgrade - there may be little point and things may look a little different if tools have changed.

I usually work with individual images, create a cloned variant, change the engine and compare for differences.

Iirc the options are mentioned in this webinar but sorry, I can't recall exactly where on the time line.

Got it. Thanks. I guess the real question is "How long before a current C1 version will not upgrade an older session or the old engine? Ever?"

From Capture One 4 and later should be upgradable. Before Capture One 4 it was another program, from a coding point of view, for both Windows and Mac.

    Edit:
From Capture One 7 onwards, a different session database file is used, thanks to the inclusion of the catalog feature in that release.
So if you might want to catch up, you could play save and update all sessions from Capture One 4, 5, and 6 to a more current version.
