Can't Edit Image

I downloaded the Library of Congress large TIFF image again and confirmed it edits fine in Adobe Photoshop CC, including cropping and setting IPTC headline: importing this PS-edited file into C1 Pro has no positive effect: this version shows my PS edits, but is again NOT editable in C1 Pro.

Guess: not RGB color space.   Capture One doesn't do grayscale.  Try this to convert the image to Adobe RGB and then try to import the image:

    sips -M /System/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/AdobeRGB1998.icc relative /path/to/the/image.tif

from the command line.   Use the appropriate path to the image.

I assume you can edit other tiff files, so your preferences are set up for editing tiffs?

EDIT: greyscale, clearly the better hint :-)

    DING DING DING!

Yes, that was it, thanks! I keep forgetting about the grayscale non-support.

Editing the file did not actually fix it: I had to re-import the edited (now RGB format) file to fix it for some reason.

(Still not sure about the non-visibility of JPEG file for import, but the edit issue was my main problem as I don't really need that JPEG file.)

By the way knew nothing of SIPS command and I just edited in PS to fix. Next time will try that SIPS command, thanks!

I've never tried it, but Image -> Load Metadata might fix the problem after conversion, too.

When I forget to convert to RGB first I normally delete the images and re-import after conversion.  It's easy enough.

Thank Walter Rowe.  He mentioned that command in this post: https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360009717838/comments/360001746657

I had been using ImageMagick to do something similar.  sips generates a smaller resulting image and updates the image in place.

So, I hit this problem, and used the above sips method to convert my grey gamma 2.2 grey scales over to Adobe RGB and now my tiffs are editable.

Can I please confirm that this command is lossless?

Tiff files either use no compression or lossless compression.   That's one of the reasons they are so much larger than jpeg files.

Somewhat related: using compression on 16 bit tiff files is often a waste.   They don't compress very well and sometimes the "compressed" file turns out larger than the original.  At least that's what I've found in my tests.   Do your own tests to see if compressing 16-bit tiffs works for you.
