Faster CPU clock or more cores?

With any application it depends on whether it is written single threaded vs multi threaded. Certainly going forward software will be increasingly written to utilise the now common multi core CPU's.

I guess the question is about what new system do I get:-) For me I will be going for a multicore CPU with AMD pretty much the go to. First time for a very long time AMD for me:-)

As I see it the situation is similar to a few years ago when people said you didn't need a decent GPU because Adobe apps didn't use the GPU It was also obvious that CPU speeds had pretty much plateaued and the way to increase computing power was to add another processor via the GPU. Try running something like Topaz Sharpen AI with and without a GPU to appreciate the advantage.

The above comments refer to productivity apps and not gaming where single core performance is still relatively important, although again the GPU makes all of the difference with gaming.

My desktop is 7 years old (thought it was 6 but receipt says different:-)). It is a i7 3820 running at 4.2GHz so about the best speed you can get today single core is ~5GHz so not that much of an improvement. The AMD 3950X might be overkill but it would certainly last another 7 years whilst still performing competitively, tempting 12 cores/24 threads:-)

    That's a great article Walter.

    Thanks for the link!

I think the only secondary question to consider is for anyone who. like me, runs multiple applications (far from efficiently) on the same computer. Then I suspect that additional memory is handy.

What has really surprised me  - ever more the more I think about it - is that my 7 years old Win 7 based notebook still seems acceptably fast  - especially working with sessions as I do and mainly on internal disks. The very full internal SSDs don't seem to make much difference until I get to the point where memory used is about the same as free space and then things start to get tricky for potential hibernation needs.

The 7 years old mobile GPU is utilised (just about) but will have limited effect. Nevertheless the overall performance is usually far better than I would expect. Interestingly it has the mobile version of the same CPU that IanS mentions above - probably because it must be of a similar age and availability.
