I support the idea, but note that the new brush selection approach is not well-aligned with naming layers immediately.

The problem is that new layers aren't created when one chooses the brush but when one starts brushing. This means one first has to brush a bit before one can name the layer.

In my view, the new brush/layer selection/creation approach is more geared towards casual use and makes most sense for users who do not use more than 2-3 layers.

However, the new brush selection design need not interfere with how users used to be able to work with more layers more efficiently with the old brush design. All we need are
    1. a way to create a layer of a certain type (without selecting a brush) (CHECK), and
    2. another universal brush that exhibits the correct behaviour depending on the type of layer that is currently selected.

With 1., the feature suggested here -- go straight to naming the layer -- can be supported.

With 2., we can still efficiently switch between layers, tweaking them immediately without having to choose a matching brush first (see my "Universal Brush" feature request).

"note that the new brush selection approach is not well-aligned with naming layers immediately."

Agree.  I've had multiple problems with the new brush/layer system(documented elsewhere in this forum), and the naming issue is one of them. Previously I was quite meticulous about naming layers and keeping them organized, but I find this new interface janky and unintuitive.

Please, yes, bring back the Universal Brush!

    Hi Steve,

Thank you for feedback on Capture One - this is always welcomed and encouraged among our users and we appreciate the time you've taken to contribute towards the development of the software.

I have forwarded your comments and suggestions to our Product Management team as something to consider in a future release.

Whilst we cannot comment on future releases, we take all suggestions on board and hopefully your feedback contributes towards a future version of Capture One.

I like to name first, too. It should be available as option in preferences for ADJUSTMENT layer. We mostly have a lot of those but few clone/heal layers. 95% since 13.1 update I will use ONE heal layer - before I had to use ABUNDANCE of them. So I like that in 95% I can start brush and even if I come back later I can star brushing and it will add to the heal layer by auto. I have two heal layers I only need to pick right one and it will add there.

I can double-click "Heal layer 1" to rename it to "blemishes" where I want 100% opacity and name the other to "wrinkles" where I want 25% opacity. But l Adjustment layer is too much, since I have them a lot - this feature to have a lot of layers was one of key selling point to come from Lr to C1. Naming 1st included!

How to improve naming confusion (sometimes I forget to name and was pressing BBEEBE in effort to brush just to realize I named the layer: Make POP-UP dialog when "create new layer" is pressed - either from "+" or "shortcut" or "start brushing". If one just pres B and start brushing to create his vision, be polite and patient as a butler and let him finish without interruption.

But as he finishes, delay a bit and pop-up large dialog for naming this new created layer. Enter closes it.

Make it in preferences: Should I ask you for layer name? Yes / No

Make option to reverse action from brush to erase or vice versa with one ALT or with right mouse click.

I fully agree with this suggestion. Would be great to be able to immediately type a name for a new layer (that is without first double clicking) after you hit the plus (+) symbol. The default name "Layer #" would then either be overwritten, or saved if you choose to first draw a mask (basically the same as it is now).

    Easy-peasy indeed!

I seem to recall that when layers were introduced the first thing offered was naming and that people did not like it. Just wanted to get on with drawing a mask or whatever they planned to do.

    Perhaps I misremember.

Read carefully my suggestion: Once it was only ONE option: to name layer first. People (me included!) hated that, but as I want to learn the tool to it's finest I realised it is super important when you have 10 or 20 layers for various things. Just when I started to appreciate the feature it was removed. So I suggested that be an OPTION now in settings.

Furthermore we got new brushes and with heal brush I would not prefer naming 1st. So let make option to name layer 1st only on ADJUSTMENT layer (as any option in settings).

I would also like to support the idea of the option to name a layer as soon as it is created. It will provide for a much more facile work stream and encourage better working practice (in my view....).
