Catalog file on external drive (same as images)

Are there any techical issues with running the C1 catalog file from an external drive (USB3) - meaning that referenced images, database and preview files would be all on one drive, portable between home and office computer. I can't find any documentation of it...

And are there noticeable performance penalties by running the database from an external drive?

  Hi Kasper,

  Capture One doesn't need the RAW images all the time, but only for export or local corrections, for instance. But it needs the catalog and the previews all the time, and storing them on an external drive could slow a little bit the process.

  As Robert says - maybe some performance hit -  likely mainly on opening the catalogue if it is quite large.

  You probably need to try it on your hardware configuration(s) in order to make your assessments.

  If all of your source files are referenced to the portable drive and the drive maps the same on all devices to which you connect it you could also consider, and test the performance of, keeping the catalogue files on the main drive when working and copying the latest state to the portable drive when moving between locations. Then back to the main drive.

  Obviously you would need to be sure to do it - but if such a thing might prove to be significantly advantageous to performance it would at least be an option.

  Or work with Sessions when dealing with projects in progress.

  Thank you both for your input! It sounds as if at least there are no technical issues with doing it. So I'll go ahead and test the performance issues. In general I'm testing moving away from images on a large server - but fed to my various catalogs through (cabled) network, to having large USB disks attached directly. I've been having major reliability issues with the network solution (databases were always stored locally). And for now, all problems have gone away since ditching the server solution that has kept me rolling for the last many many years...
