Capture One 20 and Nik Collection 3 Problem

I can't help with your problem I'm afraid, but I'm interested to know if you got anywhere.

I'm wondering whether there is any benefit for C1 users to upgrade to Nik V3. As far as I can tell most of the new features relate to PS and LR workflow, and they have a perspective tool that is pretty much what we already have in C1.

Thank you for your reply. As far as Capture One is concerned, if you buy it on sale and use LR and/or Photoshop it is an OK upgrade. Like all Nik upgrades I don't see anything that has changed. That said, I love the program but, version one and version 3 are very similar. The perspective took is a nice addition but its nothing to write home about which I am sorry to say. Tech support is very good.

One more thing, I wish Capture One and Nik would work together because their is one item that is not working in Capture One and its the Brush tool and all the functions that come along with the tool.

Did that brush tool ever work with C1 (i.e. in a previous version)? I don't think I've ever seen it. It certainly isn't there with my version 2 of Nik.

Does anyone of you know if the non-destructive workflow of the new NIK version 3 can be used when used from C1? I don’t use Lightroom nor Photoshop.

Yes it does, C1 crates a jpeg or Tiff image to be saved. Again, one of the main functions in Nik is not available in Capture One. However, it still worth the purchase price. I use it on 90% of my work.

@jon-nolan, could I just confirm what you're saying here please. What I understand you're saying is this:

    1. As in the past, if you 'Edit with' from C1, a TIF is created and then that TIF returns to C1 with your Nik edits

    2. If you then 'Edit with' (or perhaps 'Open with'?) that same TIF file back into the same Nik plugin, your edits are not only there but can be re-adjusted. So if, for arguments sake, you have increased the Fine Structure in Silver Efex to the max, it would be at that setting again when you go to re-edit.

Step 2 would be a big change, because in the past if you went back into Nik all the settings you had adjusted in Nik were reset to their starting points.

    Hope I've got that right.

I decided to test this myself by downloading the trial and yes, indeed it works as you say Jon-Nolan. This makes the upgrade worth it in my book. I used to make adjustments in Nik and save those adjustments as a recipe so that I could reapply those adjustments to a new C1 version if I needed to. No need to do that anymore, which makes it worth the upgrade price.

The workflow, for anyone interested, is this:

    1. From C1, select your image. If it's a raw or jpg file, go to Image > Edit with, choose the Nik plugin you want to work with and choose TIF as the export format. (The non-destructive feature only works with TIF files).
    2. Make your adjustments in the Nik plugin. When you're done, make sure you have the check the box marked 'Save and edit later (larger files)' before clicking Save. You'll now have your adjusted version in C1, just as in the past.
    3. To continue editing this file, choose Image > Open with and choose the same Nik plugin you worked with last time. (You must choose 'Open with' or C1 will send a new TIF file to Nik without the previous edits embedded in the file.) In the Nik plugin, you'll see your previous adjustments available for further tweaking. Tweak away, save the file again (again with that check box ticked) and you're done.

It only works with one plugin at a time (you can't go to Silver Efex then Color Efex then back to Silver Efex, probably with good reason.) You can clone your version in C1 and open the second version in Nik, but any adjustments made are applied to both versions when you return to C1.

Nik has a page about this feature here: https://help-nikcollection3.dxo.com/non-destructive-workflow. For the purposes of C1 users, we are in effect using the Nik Collection in standalone mode I believe.
