C1 v20 masking - unchanged from V11?
I read somewhere that masking in C1 v20 (maybe earlier) had been improved over v11 and that I could draw a rough mask over some area and C1 could snap the mask to the the actual outline of the object.I have used masking a lot in C1 v11 and it does have that general ability - sort of - IF you draw the mask carefully enough,. IF you don't stray too far from the object being masked, IF you do it by clicking here and there rather than dragging the mouse, etc.
I downloaded C1 v20 hoping that the masking had been improved Auto Mask feature but in my experiments so far suggest that the way Auto Mask works has not changed since v11. Maybe I misunderstood.
Can someone comment on this please?

The auto-masking feature has not changed. And it has always been of limited use - it's OK sometimes when you have a suitable object to mask (perhaps a red roof with a hard edge against a blue sky) but it will never work for something like making a mask around the fur of a cat, for example. And the hard edge of a mask produced using it can produce results that look a bit fake.
But there are several masking features that will help. There's the refine mask and feather mask options that can help you get a rough mask better aligned to the edges of an object. And there is the Luma Range tool. For one recent tutorial showing how well that can get your mask shaped round something (trees in this case) see this video from about the 11:00 point. https://youtu.be/hWXsg80HDB4
Also, another tool you can use is making a mask from a colour selection in the Colour Editor tool. (For instance you could make a mask from the red of the roof in the example I mentioned.)
