linking/hiding RAW+jpg images

    I can tell you that there are some RAW + JPG settings in C1 (with those in import being the most relevant/providing a few configurable options) but even after having watched a few courses on them I don’t have a strong grasp, & further it would seem that they differ greatly in functionality from Aperture’s way of management.

    While I cannot provide much in the way of assistance with regard to C1’s implementation, I can however relay to you what I now do in my workflow, as a fellow former Aperture user who has since migrated over to C1: I have found it strongly recommended in several different reputable sources to maintain a “referenced” catalog, that is, not to import images into C1, but rather maintain an external folder hierarchy (simple to begin with, & then as detailed as you like after import, BUT using the C1 interface to do so, which is touted as the “KEY TRICK”, as it were)

    Without a larger expose on the merits of that approach, suffice it to say that I myself have elected to implement this method, & in doing so I import all RAW images (from card or folder, via “file type” sort” 1st, & then some, if not all of the JPG’s in a subsequent import, often immed after. If you wish to use the “User Collections” organization tools available (as I do) you can then create 2 groups, “shootname RAW” & shootnameJPG” along with albums for each (top level album being “All” for each) which is where I then drag the most recent import to its respective folder. While this does not keep them linked as it did in Aperture, if your files are named via a method that preserved the capture time chronology it makes it elementary (though admittedly a manual endeavor) to then correlate a given RAW with its JPG counterpart.

    This workflow is fairly new to me, but I am implementing it as a hybrid of 2 others that seemed to best mirror the granular level of control, organization, & familiarity that I was accustomed to in Aperture, but perhaps (hopefully) someone will come along who knows better & can supply a preferable alternative for us both.

    Thanks Ray.  That approach is pretty much what I've been drifting toward to cope.  I guess I'd assumed that linking RAW files was just a basic necessity of digital photo management.  I've normally used the TIFF as my working format and just saved the RAW for images where I feel the need to work on detail in shadows or other types of enhancement where the extra information is helpful. I could get away with this because I liked the TIFF image generated by my camera anyway.

      This approachI takes a lot of disk space, but its seemed a worthwhile fallback.  If I have to manually maintain links through filenames, then I'll have to think about whether--for me--its worth keeping the RAWs.  I routinely change file names from the original, but have previously done that when editing.  I may have to re-examine naming during import.

    I like C1, but will admit to having a hard time in the transition from Aperture.  They LOOK similar, but I've been slow coming to realize that the logic and operation are actually radically different.  That apparent similarity had me making many mistakes and caused much confusion as I made way to many assumptions as to what was going on.

    I've watched a number of the C1 videos.  They help, but one sometimes has to go back and listen to several times to figure out what they are saying, as the presenter knows his subject so well that he tends to skip over key points.  That's a common problem in all types of documentation everywhere though.

    I'm getting more comfortable with the workflow, but it isn't yet automatic like I need it to be.  Aperture fit like an old shoe, so I'm missing it!
