rotate live view with sony A7II
Hello to everybody!
I was trying to tether my new sony A7II in my studio and I could not rotate the live view when the camera is in portrait position, on C1 the video is still horizontal.
Is there a fix?
thanks!

I am happily corrected but as far as I know there is no rotation in live view. Perhaps for some models but not that I am aware of yet. 0 -
.....this is how we get punished for not using a phase 1 back !
i see more and more pros moving away from dmf especially for studio still life work so in the long run this will become a serous issue for p1 in a market segment where they think they dominate but to torture us this way will not help them and it is very sad because c1 renders very nice files from sony raw !0 -

Punished by Sony via the SDK??0 -

I do not get your point as I believe there is no rotation whichever camera we have live view from, including Phase One backs. I could be mistaken...
As Grant stated, it is primarily a function of the SDK the camera manufacturer delivers.0 -

this is a joke right ?
the software engineers here are not able to find a solution for this ? very funny, because it worked fine for example with canon and older c1 versions...0 -
I have no experience with C1 but I regularly use tethered capture and live view with Nikon Canon and Olympus with their own software and with Camranger, they all let rotate live view video, it would be silly don't let it rotate, 50% of the shootings are done in vertical position!
I thought the issue with C1 was a bug or a first implementation of Sony support, it does actually mean that it is how it is supposed to work 🤓 ?
I would buy C1 in a heartbeat If will be possible to rotate live view... but right now it is useless (if you shoot in vertical).0 -

Not sure who was joking but I wasn't. Can you give more details of Canon model and/or Capture One version that did the trick? Seems you memory is better then mine and I am willing to learn.
And we can get out of venting steam and make it a real and constructive conversation.0 -
I have just tested my Nikon D610 and live view rotation work with latest C1, I just rotate the camera and the video feed turn 90° and everything is perfect.
So the problem is with Sony, do I have to complain to sony or Phase One engineers will sort it out?
or better they could give each other a call and fix this 😄0 -

we are getting.. where exactly? 😕
I'd like to have this issue fixed so I can keep working with the Sony and I can sell my Nikon that I use just for live view tethering.
Is possible to have an official statement by a Phase One tech?0 -

Raise a Support Case to get an official response.
FWIW I checked with two of my Canon bodies and there is no automatic rotation. I think it is down to what the camera technology offers and what the Manufacturers include, perhaps body by body, in their tethering SDK (if they have one.)
Whether a developer could find a way to hack that software (or create a completely new version of their own should they really wish to enter such a world of potential pain) and stay "legal" from a licensing point of view is something else to be considered.
It also occurs to me that rotation by 90 degrees will reduce the effective resolution available for assessing the image and rotating the viewing screen may be a better option on an important shoot. At least that might be so historically. Perhaps with the latest 4/5000k large screens rotating the image would be more viable and more practical than rotating the screen.

Thank you for the idea but I have already contacted the support weeks ago and got no answer at all.
I don't know which Canon body you have but I work with 5DmarkII and mark III and I can rotate live view with Camranger (on Mac and iOS), actually you said "automatic" but I just need to rotate live view, I don't care if it is automatic or manual.
I'd like to know if it is a limitation of the supplied SDK from Sony and C1 have just to sit and wait for Sony or they can do some coding magic that will rotate a video feed.
I don't understand what do you mean when you say "rotation by 90 degrees will reduce the effective resolution" live view video stream is in low resolution, it doesn't change anything if on screen is in vertical or horizontal. Your option to rotate the screen is a real pain, also the cursor movements will rotate (and I don't want to have to think about how to move it when doing an important shoot).
Actually I don't understand if here (on C1) is common to use live view that doesn't rotate, if it is please tell me the trick to move stuff on set while watching the screen without getting sea sick 😉0 -

That is very unusual. Did you get a Support Case Reference number? Have you looked at the case through your account to see if the status has changed in any way?[quote="jpozzi" wrote:

I checked with a 1D3 and a 600D I use mainly with manual lenses.[quote="jpozzi" wrote:

Then you really need to get the officlal word directly from Phase ( via a Support Case).[quote="jpozzi" wrote:

I was thinking mainly about the potential use of the same screen for for reviewing the captured image as well as the Live View feed. If only the live view feed is displayed than I agree then the issue about resolution is less noteworthy.

if p1 really wants to solve this issue i´m very convinced they can fix this but as with other issues it has no priority for them. photographers shooting studio stills and using live view are a tiny minority of their user base and as i already said i think they are not unhappy with this situation. i want software developers to their job as i do mine and make things possible and work i don´t want to hear all this excuses and who is to blame for. to suggest rotating the monitor is awkward and will not look really professional and cool in the year 2015 when you are with ADs and clients. 0 -
Ive been using Phase backs for more than 10 years and just used my recently acquired Sony A7mk2 for a paying job for the 1st time. I was surprised at the lack of rotation ability in live view when shooting portrait orientation. I'm more surprised to see this issue not being addressed till now, considering the camera was released 9 months ago. I would have assumed more photographers were using the camera tethered in studio. It certainly be a pain to hook up a separate monitor via hdmi for live view. I can't believe P1 engineers can't work out a fix, especially with the new A7r mk2 coming into play, I expect there will be more Sony shooters than ever. 0 -
Yes, and don't blame Sony for all this.
If Sony does not permit autorotation (nor does Canon, IIRC) just enable manual rotation or camera orientation in your own live preview window.
How does Sony prevent you on doing this?
Come on!0 -
Quick question, for a possible cludge. Do you have an iPad?
An app called Duet Display will let you use an iPad as a secondary display. You can put the Liveview on the iPad, lock the screen orientation, then rotate the iPad to portrait. Gives you a portrait display of what is on the Liveview. Refresh is good, quality is great, only issue might be that it's not colour calibrated.
Messy cludge? For sure. Does it work? Yep.0 -
it very much looks like p1 has no interest in solving this problem. new version (9) but same old problem to my surprise they now also stopped live view rotation for the canon 5dsr. 0
