Expression Media very slow with Nef-data
Hello.
I have used Expression Media since the launching and before the predessor iView Media Pro.
Last month I switched from Canon to Nikon, which is a fantastic system.
The only problem I have with the Nikon Raw files (called NEF) is, that expression media is very slow compared working with the CR2 files from Canon.
Especially when you use the light table to compare files, it needs more than 5 seconds to open the lighttable.
Any idea will be helpful, because I like this application very much and wouldn´t like to change my workflow.
Thanks
Stefan

Hello Stefan,
I shoot in NEF also but i'm cataloging in DNG and that is reasonable fast (about 1 second per image).
But I did a test with NEF's and they open in about the same speed, I experience no difference between NEF or DNG.
Did You trie to convert some of your NEF's to DNG to see what happens?
How many images are in Your catalog?
The maximum is about 128.000 but that is less when you generate big previews. (I can not find the comparison table so fast). Maybe trie to make a test catalog with only a view images and see how the responsiveness is?

Which platform (Mac/Windows) and which version of EM are you using? If I recall, "slow-loading NEFs in light table" was a known problem in the first version of EM2 (SP1), and the problem was fixed with SP2. (It fixed the problem for me.) 0 -
Hello.
Thanks for your quick responses. So as Roelof told me, I tried it with DNG´s and its really fast.
Number of images couldn´t be the problem, because its far away from 128000.
And the size couldn´t be the problem, because the speed is the same with D3S or D3X Data.
My platform ist Mac Pro 8-core, 3Ghz with 8 GB Ram, I use Expression Media 2.0.2, I think its the newest version. I tried to delete the preferences, uninstall old versions - nothing better.
I assume, that something on my hard disc is in conflict with the programm. But which application could that be?
Thanks in advance.

If the full number is "Version 2.0.2 (2096)" then I believe you have the newest version.
I'll leave it to more expert users to help with the problem. You should also submit the problem to Phase One tech support.0 -
for NEF, somewhere here it says to use the apple rendering engine in raw panel of the media rendering preferences when this happens 0 -
Hello.
After trying several options (including phase one support), I decide to change my workflow. Expression Media is still slow on my computer, and I couldn´t find a solution.
Thanks for your support.

This is a bug that appeared with OSX10.6 (before this version of OSX, EM2 was working fine with NEF files).
The Nikon rendering engine stopped working, and the Apple rendering engine is very slow and does not take into account the changes made in the NEF files with Nikon Capture.
This bug has been discussed a lot in the (now gone) Microsoft Expression Media forum.
Microsoft has not fixed it, and I am waiting anxiously for Phase One to fix it.0 -
Thanks for your answer NN22880UL.
In the World of Computer and software a lot of things doesnt work together, but most of the time, you think, its your personal failure.
So we have to wait until Expression Media is updated by Phase One.0
