Incredibly slow import

Most times When I import from my camera's card it takes 5 minutes or so to sort out duplicates from new photos if I have that checked, but then the actual import goes pretty quickly. today however, after un-checking that duplicate box so I could just select the new images (and thereby, I thought, cleverly saving myself some time) the actual import is taking on the order of 1 minute for each photo.
What's going on here? Why is import taking SO long? 30 minutes for 27 images? The images are from a D810, so big files, but not unusual or anything. And beyond today, how do I speed up import?

  Sound like you have something very odd going on.
  
  Have you ...
  
  Restarted C1?
  
  Rebooted the machine?
  
  I Checked the log files to see if anything odd is being reported?
  
  Clearly what you are seeing is not right but pinpointing why may take some sleuthing.

  I had the same problem which was due to a persistent database error. You could run the database check tool (I'm writing this on my tablet so not sure the exact incantation but I think it's under file). If this shows an error do file new catalogue and then import your old catalogue into this new catalogue.
  This solved all sorts of problems I had but make sure to untick check for duplicates - this seems to be work in progress.
