Capture One 5.1.1 crashes on start-up
Hi,
I'm new to this forum and unfortunately my first post is a help request.
I installed Capture One v5.1.1 on a Windows XP machine with SP3 and all other patches in place and I have not been able to start it.
It crashes on start-up every time. A box pops up but disappears so quickly that I can't read it. I have un-installed and re-installed twice and also deleted the CaptureOne folder under Local Settings/Application Data, all to no avail.
I have searched this forum and while I have seen reports of this happening to others I have yet to see a solution.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

Sometimes, a 3rd party firewall is causing troubles with CO5 during startup. Have you any installed? If yes, is it possible to temporarily disable it? 0 -
Thanks but unfortunately not. I have a hardware firewall (although I also run the Windows firewall).
I've also tried un-installing and re-installing and running it with the Windows firewall off, all anti-virus software and the anti-spyware software off.
Oh, I found out what the window that appears for a second is, it's the windows to submit a crash report to PhaseOne.0 -
Hi,
Dont know if this will help you but I have recently experienced the same problem see "unknown issue" post. My solution was to uninstall the software completely and by completely I mean find every entry associated with Phase One or Capture one and remove it (you will have to do this manually) or the fault will keep re-occuring. It took me 5 attempts to find every entry in my windows xp but I eventually got there. Then re-installed the software from the website. On the first start-up it crashed, but the next launch it ran the software without a problem. I have had this problem on 3 separate pc's so its not an xp fault or firewall etc fault as far as I can see, as they all happened at different times and my antivirus and firewalls are set to accept 5.1.1 on every level.
Hope this helps you somewhat.
Regards

Precisely the same problem here:
Win XP, SP3, .net 3.5, 2GB RAM, 3.2MHz CPU
Capture One PRO v5.1.1 build 37310 splash screen appears on screen for some 5s, then the whole lot shuts down.
Oh yes, on just one occasion only, the program came up with a "crash report" dialog box. But that disappeared too, for unknown reason(s).
_Most_ frustrating. I'm on the verge of returning the product for a full refund.0 -
@Thingo/@NN87907:
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is necessary for CO5 to work. Sometimes the .NET Fx setup has become messed up. See .NET Fx cleanup for XP:

General uninstall/reinstall CO4/5:

Thanks for your suggestion, Paul_E. It's appreciated.
However: still no luck. Capture One 5.1.1 Pro is refusing to do more than display the splash screen, and create it's folders of cruft:
.../Local Settings/Application Data/Capture One
.../Pictures/Capture One Library including sub-folders Capture, Move To, Output, and Trash.
Another point of irritation has just reared it's ugly head: it appears I can't 'reply' twice in a row on the official bug notification. I've just typed out a detailed list of all the stuff I've just tried, and the Phase One web site just spat it out into the bit bucket. Damn and blast. After typing this message, I'll see if it's a known problem.
Edit: Bug report - making two replies in succession.
Here's the gist of my vanished report again, without all the knowledge base references (I do actually have some other stuff to be getting on with):
1. deleting all the C1 cruft, as spelt out above. For all user accounts on computer. No joy.
1a. Oh yes, P1 support suggested I try creating a new user, with administrator rights, and installing C1 as that user, then running C1. No joy.
2. Repairing dot net v3.5. No joy.
3. Video adapter problem? There was mention of problems with a Matrox card. Mine is a NVIDEA GeForce FX 5500 with 256MB VRAM, bios v4.34.20.69.00. But I don't have any special settings enabled.
4. There was a DCOM error:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event ID: 10005
Date: 10 Jun 2010
Time: 20:49:16
Description: DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service StiSvc with arguments "" in order to run the server: {A1F4E726-8CF1-11D1-BF92-0060081ED811}
But I don't know if this is related to this C1 debacle.
4a. I tried starting some 'manual' services:
COM+ System Application
WMI Performance Adapter
WMI Driver Extensions
ASP.NET state services
Those four all started ok, but made no difference whatsoever.
I tried starting the WIA service (image acquisition), grasping at straws, but it would not start, because there were "no enabled devices associated".
What a frustrating mess. I've _never_ had this much trouble before.0 -
Paul_E, thanks for the suggestion. The .NET update did the trick.
SharonD, thanks for this. I already removed everything except the registry entries before I posted and if the .NET update hadn't worked I would have had to follow your suggestion and remove absolutely everything.
Now I have only 16 days left to test this software ☹️0 -

Can you confirm that you run (or have repaired) SP1 (or later) of .NET 3.5?0
