Extending the wifi range using MacBook Pro and Capture Pilot
Can anyone suggest a tried and true way or options to boost the wifi network range I set up on my MacBook Pro when linking Capture One to an iPad using Capture Pilot? I have a location situation where I will be shooting as much as 30 ft or more from client which is out of range when I set up Capture Pilot and my iPad. I plan on tethering to my Laptop from my Nikon and need for the images to appear on my iPad so client can verify some technical issues with shots I'm taking. I'll be up in a cherry picker, client on ground.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ethernet cable from Cherry Picker down to an access point (Airport Extreme or other) on the ground. Will give a ton of range. 0 -
You have probably got this covered in your planning already but don't forget to consider the effect of the cherry picker vs the location of the client vs the position of the WiFi transmitter/booster device when you set things up.
30ft does not seem much for a Wi-Fi connection unless through walls or some other material that saps signal strength.
Some years ago I successfully tested a Canon Ixus Wireless on a mast to a Notebook on the ground. The camera was probably about 40ft up. Maybe 45ft at on point in the test.
It worked well enough so long as I did not get too close to the mast. +6ft away seemed fine. Less than that and the metal in the mast combined with a poor position from the POV of the WiFi transmitter in the camera being right above the PC meant the link would drop. (Not great as it had to be instigated from the camera ...)
It proved the potential but the camera battery life with WiFi enabled was rather shorter than I could live with for what I wanted at the time.

I did this by keeping an airport extreme on the ground near the client with my laptop on a cherry picker. You could have an airport extreme on your cherry picker too as backup and use the one on the ground to extend the network if you're unable to get a strong signal. 0 -
First off, thanks to all the replies.
Drew, that battery powered TP looks interesting. Any issues using Capture Pilot? Is the connection pretty stable? Do they mention the range? I do not see specs on the links website.Do you use a Ethernet Cable from camera to TP ?
I will need to keep everything in the bucket with me and no Cat5 running out the bucket to the ground. This and similar shoots are fairly dynamic. I'll be changing angles, height, etc.. Range may need to be 50-75 ft from client at times. I'm looking at probably using a Vagabond battery to power laptop in the bucket with it doing double duty when I need a light for fill at times but laptop can run on internal battery then.
My gut says an Airport Extreme would be more glitch free but no without a built in battery source I would need to dedicate the Vagabond for its use.

Run the airport extreme in the cherry picker off of a versa battery or any other battery with a 12v output port. 0 -
The TP- link works very nicely. It has quite good range particularly when used half way between devices.
Depending on your camera you could also use the Camranger version of the TP link for far more reliable camera control and WiFi image review. No laptop wired tethering required. Also the camranger can send images to many iPads and macs at the same time, with or without a watermark. Almost total wireless camera control too.
Way more stable and less power hungry than running CO1 on a laptop.
On top of that you can shoot to card and wifi at the same time. This way if something with the tethering goes down you don't have to stop shooting.0 -
