Tethering with Capture One Pro saves the DSLR image to the computer. This is not camera brand, type or model related, as far as I know.

Yes - tethering saves the image to the computer. That is the point.

The question here is: Does Capture One ALSO allow you to save images to the camera CF card while tethered?

No. This required intimate knowledge and control of the camera firmware, which we do not have.

    Drew,

    Thanks for the information.

I do have a question about this feature requiring "intimate knowledge" of the camera firmware. There are 2 currently available software packages which have the ability to save images on the camera CF card while tethered. One is Apple's Aperture and another is a freeware product called StudioTether from http://www.mountainstorm.co.uk/ Of course, they only work on MacOS.

I'm curious that they've been able to make this work. Thus - there may be an easier way to make that functionality happen - without having to bugger with camera firmware (at least on MacOS).

    Steve,
Although the specifics are beyond my paygrade the important thing is that neither of the two companies you just mentioned make cameras 😉

    Drew,

I'm not sure I understand your response.

Software exists that can accomplish the task I asked about. Therefore it seems reasonable that Capture One could have this feature as well.

Further research led me to this info:

There is an open source project called Icarus Camera Control <http://sourceforge.net/projects/camctl/> which is a Nikon control/capture tool. It's support page has this information:

"Mac OS X, it turns out, has the Image Capture Architecture that is exactly for this purpose. The ICA provides an abstract interface to locate and access cameras, as well as a means to get at the lower level PTP commands to do the more interesting things that one wants to do with a camera. And this is the level where Icarus Camera Control operates. It uses the ICA to locate the camera and images on the camera, get thumbnails, and perform basic camera control functions. It then uses PTP messages passed through the ICA to perform more direct camera activities, including probing device features and capabilities."

    <http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/camctl/index.php?title=Main_Page>

As far as I can tell, Aperture and these other tools on MacOS are using the Image Capture Architecture to access images on the Nikon cameras and provide tethering functionality (and the feature that lets the camera save to its own on-board storage while tethered to a computer). Also - specific camera support appears to be tied to the NIkon SDK. <https://sdk.nikonimaging.com/apply/>

Just throwing that out there. Perhaps useful to one of the Capture One Mac engineers.

I just tried it with my D3 and it does not save to both.
Being a little OCD, this kinda bothers me. It would be nice to allow the camera to save the images to one or even both cards as a kind of "backup".
