Problem eventually resolved by a forced System Restore in Safe Mode to the last restore point (Windows Critical Update) from the previous day. It refused to restore normally, and it's not clear what might have caused the problem, the only change to the system in that period being that last Windows update. It's also not entirely clear what that might have comprised, though I ran Update again following the Restore, and the only things it found were updates for Windows Defender, SharePoint Workspace 2010 and Outlook 2010, none of which look like potential candidates for the problem with the C1 update and all of which updated without further problems.

Just one of those things maybe, though I'm still puzzled as to why v7.1.0 worked and v7.1.1 didn't.

    Malcolm,

I have a new notebook running Win 7 Pro 64bit.

I had 7.1 running on it perfectly well in so far as I could see from the facilities I had used.

I decided to check for WIndows updates and the inquiry returned something like 54 Important and 4 optional.

I skipped IE X and went for the rest (but only one of the optionals). The process told me that 2 updates had failed to install and then I went of the re-boot.

As Windows loaded the background screen for the account login appeared ... and the system froze. Totally. Power-off restarts required.

It offered me Safe Mode the first time it restarted but I thought I would try one more 'regualr' boot. That failed but the next power-off cycle did not offer Safe Mode. On line documentation did not describe my system accurately but I eventually unearthed Safe mode and booted from there. I did not find anything obviously wrong so, now I knew how to get safe mode again, re-started a 'normal' boot and all came up working correctly. I did not run Restore - thoough I cmae close to doing so and it would have been my next option.

I have since installed 7.1.1. with no problems noticed to date. (I do have a gadget that seems to have partly stopped working as expected after a different re-boot to install something else though)

My assumption has been that there was something odd about the set of updates (or one or more of them) that Windows proposed. I guess it is possible that your machine had a similar problem that presented itself slightly differently.

It should be interesting to see what happens next time.
