"Open with.." passes the actual file to the external program, so If a raw is selected then that file is passed.

"Edit with.." first creates a "Cooked" image (Of type selected from the dialog) recommend TIFF 16 bit, then if using catalog adds this file into the catalog, then passes the newly created file to the selected application.

So my take on how you would use "Open/Edit with.."

Do all your adjustments in Capture One.
Use "Edit with.." to send the "Cooked" new image to an external program.
After adjusting in the external program do a save and make sure it saves it with the same name and location.
Now back in CO, you will see the preview update for any changes made to the image.
Now, if want to edit the file further in another program use "Open with..", this will send the file directly and monitor the file for changes and regenerate the previews if required.

Thanks a lot Robert, but I know all those points. It's simply that I can't select an external editor that is NOT LISTED (all those listed work the way you described, but that's nothing new), all my programs that show up are grey, meaning NOT SELECTABLE. It's probably a program error not yet found after the update to El Capitan (it took C1 some time to provide a working update, and I think not all flaws are mastered).

    Kind regards,
    Richard

I cannot offer a (possible) solution. But I can select any application that is not a command line tool in CO's 'Open With' - 'Other' and 'Edit With' - 'Other'. (10.11.1 with 8.3.4)

I downloaded the latest PTLens (1.7) and installed it from dmg for a trial. After that I was able to select the PTLens standalone version using CO's 'Open With' - 'Other' as well as 'Edit With' - 'Other' and it was started in both cases.

PTLens keeps telling me that it cannot open files in 'RAW/TIFF/JPEG image format. Well, that's not CO's fault, and not part of the discussion.

Thank you Hans, that's what I did too, but it's probably due to the changes Apple made within OSX 10.11., El Capitan, that PTLens doesn't show up as possible editor.

Tech Support wrote "Capture One will show a list of available editors based upon what programs have announced it self as a HPG/TIF editor.

If this program is not listed then it is a probably a older evrsion which does not do this according to the Apple standard.

Contact the manufacturar of this software for an update where this is fixed.

We will close this case here as the issue is with 3rd party.

    Kind Regards
    Phase One Support"

So I contacted the programmer of PTLens a few minutes ago, for PTLens has support only up to 10.10 as far as is listed on the homepage. Until they fix it I'll use Aperture or the stand alone version (would have to export the TIFF) as workaround after developing and post processing with C1.

    Kind regards,
    Richard
