Networking Question
I have already bought this to Phases attention through my local dealer, but thought I would throw it out there in case anyone had any ideas amongst the user community.
I would like to change my current workflow to one that is based entirely on C1. At the moment I use a mixture of various versions of Leaf Capture, both V8 and V11, as well as C1. I have a few backs, some of which are older and will be replaced with Phase backs or other Leaf backs, and one current model that I use with C1. Either way, by the end of the year I hope to have all backs that will shoot tethered with C1. One on a P3, one on a GX680 and one on a H1. I shoot mainly still life with a bit of people thrown in for fun.
The issue I would like some advice on is this.
At the moment for the stills I shoot tethered and save directly across my network to a NAS (LaCie 5Big), speed is not an issue obviously for stills. I do this using LC V8.4.6. It works perfectly, no issues at all.
If I am doing anything that requires any speed, i.e. people, I shoot tethered to a local work station and that is also fine, no problems there.
But when I am finished, I would like to transfer the files to the NAS, and then work on them from another workstation. I realize this will not be that fast, but it is doable, but that is not the problem.
What I have noticed, and bought to Phases attention, is that although you can see files across the network, work on them, make adjustments and such, when you process files and WRITE across a network on Mac, if you use AFP (Apple File Protocol), the files are invisible. You can search for them and the Mac will find them, and you can double click them and they open correctly, but simply browsing for them in the finder, they are invisible files. Oddly, if you connect to the NAS and repeat the exercise using SMB (Windows Protocol) it works as expected (the same way LC V8 & V11 do with AFP) and the files show up in the finder where you would expect them to, no problems.
So to recap, same back, same computer, same NAS, Leaf Capture will export files across a network using AFP, C1 won't (up to and including 6.2) but will work as expected using SMB.
Is there any reason not to use SMB on an all Mac network I suppose is the question I am asking?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Sorry for the long post.
Kind regards,
Jason.

If I would have to setup a network like yours for a client, and if I would find out that SMB is the best option with the applications, operating systems and storage solution in regard, I would use SMB all the way and exclusively (disable AFP). Having both network protocols (AFP and SMB) would degrade performance or could hurt functionality. This may be as well the case in your current setup but I can't be sure based on the information provided. Put differently: disabling SMB on any component could affect (improve) AFP performance as well. So far for general advice and troubleshooting.
The bottom-line - I think - is how your hardware (in your case the LaCie NAS and Mac with OS X) do the network protocols, how they are stacked on the network binding (getting dirty now) and how applications like Capture One and others on OS X respond to it. It is an equation with multiple variables. What works for you today could work out differently with a different NAS or other version of OS X for example tomorrow (upcoming OS X Lion has reportedly dropped Samba, the SMB implementation on Unix and Linux, which will expectedly replaced by another SMB tool; so what happens when you connect a new Lion running system to your network in a few months).
Very little is known to the public regarding Capture One and network protocols as far as I know. Not designed for working over a LAN I believe that an all Apple/OS X or all Windows setup with a fast LAN would work. Start mixing into a heterogenous environment and you are both experimenting and on your own.0 -
Hi Paul,
Thanks for your suggestions, I hope I do not misunderstand you, as I guess that English is your second language. The point you make about running both protocols at the same time is a good one. But I don't. I had to specifically turn it on on the NAS to test it as I have only encountered this problem with C1. As I said, all versions of Leaf Capture work over AFP flawlessly.
And where possible, I have tried to keep all of the variables down. As I mentioned, same back (Aptus II 5), same computer work station, same network, same NAS. And it is only exporting files from C1 over AFP that causes an issue, reading and manipulating files is fine, but if you process to a network drive (NAS) over AFP, the files show (not) as invisible in the finder. Then the same thing over SMB, works as Leaf Capture does, and the files are there in the finder, not invisible.
There appears to be something different in the way C1 writes the files (exported .tif, .jpg etc) vs the way Leaf Capture does. Hopefully someone from the C1 team will walk down the hall and have a chat to the Leaf boys and girls.
In the meantime SMB does work, but I don't know if it is any better or worse than AFP in terms of performance.
Does anyone have an opinion on that?
Especially considering your comment "upcoming OS X Lion has reportedly dropped Samba, the SMB implementation on Unix and Linux, which will expectedly replaced by another SMB tool; so what happens when you connect a new Lion running system to your network in a few months"
Kind regards,

Correct assumption, I apologize for any incorrectness while learning. The forum is a great playing-field for that by the way. 😉0 -
Hi Jason, this question is unrelated to your post. I am more or less like you shoot mostly still life and some people from time to time and want to get a GX680 system with the Phase One back. I don't know if you mind sharing some info of your GX680 setup. Thx.

Hi Pak,
I don't use a Phase One back with the GX680. I use a Leaf CantareXY. I am investigating what to put on the Fuji as a replacement/upgrade and was considering an Aptus 17 or P21 as I like the size for most of the product shots I do. But rescently I have been considering Sinar more and more as they are one of the few makes that can control the GX680 through the software in a similar way that I have now with the Leaf.
Cheers,
