Could it be a permissions issue?

    Hi Paul,

File renaming works perfectly in all other software including Lightroom.

Ok, but let's check what Capture One thinks…

In the Library tool, Action menu (small triangle right), Show Info.
In the Info pane, check the permission status. Should be read & write.

    Permissions: All

I did try mounting the NAS share as a windows mapped drive letter and renaming works perfectly.
I tend not to map my shares but instead access the share directly with the UNC path

    \\NASRAID2\photos

There is a known bug with UNC path in CO 7.1.4. Are you on 7.1.5 already?

I suggest you report to Phase One in a support case.

Yes I am in the middle of a support call now.

    All the best, Ian

Quick update on this ongoing rename problem.
Problem still exists in v7.1.6 and has now been recognised by support as a bug.
