General questions from a newbie
Hey Guys,
I'm a newcomer to version 4 of Capture One Pro (although previously used 3.7 on occasion) and wondered if I might throw some questions past you?
Many thanks!
Ian
NB: Just to clarify I'm running Capture One 4PRO (build 27340.27308) on a MacBook Pro 2.4ghz w/4gb (10.5.6).
PS: I would have loved to create a support ticket (as per the suggestion of thread "Have a question, need an answer? Create a support case") with this and some 'issues' I found, but the support page won't let me as I don't have hardware registered!
I'm a newcomer to version 4 of Capture One Pro (although previously used 3.7 on occasion) and wondered if I might throw some questions past you?
- When processing a RAW file the "Base Characteristics" palette uses the default ICC profile for my camera (5DMkII) and sets the curve to "Film Standard". Assuming this is applying an adjustment to the image, am I correct in thinking "linear response" would be neutral (nothing applied)? If so, how do I make it default?
- In ACR/LR/Aperture you are able to hold down the option-key whilst moving exposure/blacks sliders to switch the background to black and only show over/under-exposed areas. Can I do this on CO when making levels adjustments?
- I can't see any way to change levels/curve for individual RGB channels, am I missing something?
- The colour editor is fantastic but wonder if there's any way when using the colour picker (and holding down the click whilst dragging) to dynamically adjust the colour proportionately (aka LR/ACR)?
- When using the colour editor, rather than having to click "view selected color range", is there a shortcut-key I can just hold down?
- Are there any other 5DMKII users here? I'm finding the images a little dark on "Film Standard" and wonder if something is amiss?
- Does anyone know why zooming in/out causes pixelation and regeneration? If CO was applying an effect/adjustment I might understand the delay, but certainly don't get this in other RAW programs.
- Has anyone had interesting results from exporting a low-res file (I wouldn't normally do this, but)? I did a 72dpi 800px wide test and the result was very rough, with jagged edges. The exact same output from Aperture was much smoother.
Many thanks!
Ian

You can create a "style" with the linear curve.

channels not yet. they will come back in an upcoming update. The colour editor is fantastic but wonder if there's any way when using the colour picker (and holding down the click whilst dragging) to dynamically adjust the colour proportionately (aka LR/ACR)?

previews at viewing sizes smaller than 25% are low res. When you zoom in the image will be regenerated in high res.the support page won't let me as I don't have hardware registered!
just type "dslr" or something else...0 -
Thomas,
Thanks for the reply, some comments:[quote="thomas" wrote:

This may well be the case, but I seem to be able to create a "style" with "Film Standard" selected. My question was: is "linear response" neutral - therefore that nothing is being applied and 'as is' out of the camera RAW file?[quote="thomas" wrote:

Excellent, this is great news.[quote="thomas" wrote:

didn't get the question...
This is a difficult one to explain. In ACR/LR there is an HSL tool called "adjust <hue/saturation/luminance> by dragging in the photo". Placing this at any point in the photo and holding down left-mouse whilst dragging up/down will alter the H/S/L of that particular colour region (slice). For example doing this on a section of grass causes the yellow/green green slider to both move proportionately.[quote="thomas" wrote:

Understood. Do I therefore assume programs such as Aperture are not regenerating the preview from RAW when zooming in/out in (incrementally)? Meaning they resize the pre-generated 100% version crudely without regenerating it from RAW for those particular dimensions?[quote="thomas" wrote:

Well I leave the combo selection as "No product registered in your profile" and fill in the fields prefixed with a red arrow, I then hit 'Next' and I am returned to a blank version of the same form!? Mystery to me..
In respect of the "no" answers you gave, can I assume PhaseOne are taking note of these suggestions or that a wish-list exists anywhere?
Thanks again, Ian.0 -
Regarding the linear response file curve and whether this is neutral, it depends what you consider neutral. A digital sensor is linear device: twice the amount of light, twice charge, double the value. Your eye is a non-linear device (say: logarithmic) like film was/is. Hence you need a non-linear film curve to translate sensor luminance into eye-expected luminance.
The linear response is in general used for technical purposes like creating profiles and not regarded neutral.
Regarding feature requests: create a support case from Phase One web site. See the sticky thread in this forum as well.0 -

Actually you can achieve the same goal with the colour editor but not exactly this way. The colour editor's strength is not that much to bend colours but to fine tune colours. But (especially in combination with the colour balance tool) you can create different moods and styles of course.
In ACR/LR there is an HSL tool called "adjust <hue/saturation/luminance> by dragging in the photo". Placing this at any point in the photo and holding down left-mouse whilst dragging up/down will alter the H/S/L of that particular colour region (slice). The real strength of Capture One's colour editor compared to all other softwares is that it works on the level of the camera profile (the input icc profile). Means it works before any curve or other adjustment is applied. So it's possible to create finest modulations even in high saturated colours that would usually cause clipping.
To create extrem colour bending you can go forward step wise: bend the colours as much as possible, safe the adjustment not as "preset" but safe a new icc profile. Load the new icc profile as input profile and go on adjusting the colours.Do I therefore assume programs such as Aperture are not regenerating the preview from RAW when zooming in/out in (incrementally)?
I don't know, sorry.0 -

I would not whait for it.. promised for being in the pipeline of some things since some time and some releases already.[quote="thomas" wrote:

Thanks again, Ian.
There are many things people would like to have implemented or reimplemented.
Phase One seems to ignore it. Or telly you that some things are in pipeline but dont specify it. Major things still missing are beeing ignored in total so far.0 -

Just wanted to mention that version 4.8 seems to fix this problem for me, intentionally or not!
