Custom White Balance
I posted this on dpreview but so far no solutions. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong…
When I use a custom white balance setting in my 1DMKII (use expodisc) Capture One LE still is varying my Temp and Tint values like in AWB. If I open the same shots in CS2 (ACR) the WB values are static as I expected. Any ideas why my values are varying when shooting with a custom white balance?
Thanks

I've seen the same thing with my 30D. But the shots look balanced, so I'm not worried. Now if I were shooting products where the colors not only had to look good, but be accurate I might worry more about what the number mean.
I wonder if it is because color temp is not the whole white balance story. That when tint is taken into account a slightly different temperature with a different tint can more accurately describe the white point of that shot.
I don't use Photoshop, so I'm not familiar with how it represents white balance. Does it use the temp + tint, or just temp alone?0 -

Photoshot uses Temp and Tint as well. Here is a link to my samples and how I ultimately figured out that Capture One was varying the settings and CS was not. Click Here for samples
I understand what you are saying but that is more of how AWB works...reading the scene and adjusting Temp and Tint accordingly. I'm simply trying to set WB via ED and apply that custom WB setting so it remains constant throughout my shoot. Its not critical but I think that is how it is supposed to work with Custom WB.0 -
4Runner,
If you want to use a Custom, Auto, or Kelvin set WB, then you must shoot to a CF card and tranfer images into Capture One.
The pulldown at the White Balance tab should be set to Shot
When shooting Tethered, WB must be established in Capture One.
The best way to establish a good white balance is to:
--> Choose an in-camera preset, i.e. daylight, flash
--> Capture 1st image of a true gray or Macbeth target under same lighting conditions
--> Set WB in Capture One using 1st image, adjust to satisfaction
--> Apply this WB to all images in a Session - or if tethered - Set as Capture white balance
White Balance can be set in Capture One using a few methods.
• Auto White Balance icon (Magic Wand- Win), icon to let Capture One automatically establish a WB setting.
• Use the cursor or eyedropper tool to select true neutral gray target.
• Use the cursor or eyedropper tool to select a neutral area within the image itself.
Since establishing an accurate WB using Capture One is so easy, I could never be convinced an in-camera Custom is superior.
Sincerely,

Thanks. Maybe that is not set to shot....I think it is set to "custom" if memory serves me. I'm using CF card.
Yes, it easy to adjust WB in Capture One, I do that lots. However, I want to set WB via my Exposdisc and then apply CWB per my camera and then shoot without worry. At least that is my plan. I also will shoot Whibal and apply WB setings via Capture afer the fact..
Thanks again for the reply. I will let you know what I find out later tonight.

No luck....Capture One has a mind of its own. It is on "Shot" from the drop down but it does say "Custom" where you can save your own WB settings. It looks like Capture One is not recognizing my Custom WB set on my camera for some reason. CS2 has no problem. I'll keep looking at options within Capture One but this might be a "bug" Let me know what you think. 0 -
I did some more testing and something isn't right with Capture One and my custom WB. As another test, instead of setting a custom WB via a gray shot image, I manually set the temp to 3000K on my 1DMKII and Capture One picks it up perfectly. However, as long as I try and set a custom WB, it doesn't recognize the WB. Again, CS2 recognizes the WB using either method as expected. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? 0 -
Are there any other suggestions out there? Can someone please confirm that if they set a CWB in their camera using a target image (i.e. not setting a temp value) that Capture One picks up that value and it remains static for all shots using that CWB? Thanks 0 -
I use that method for my Pentax *ist-D and Expodisc. i.e. set a manual WB in camera and C1 picks up the WB straight from camera with C1 set to "Shot".
I also use the in-C1 methods occassionally, though my RAW file isn't compressed and takes 12Mb even for a grey frame through the Expodisc.
From what I understand the storage of the custom WB is per-camera specific, and some manufs use encryption and the like to increase the fun-factor for people like Phase One 😜 Maybe it's specific to your camera?
Sorry I can't help any more!

Thanks for the reply MattMatic. I'm using a 1DMKII and I did post in a dpreview forum geared towards Canon....no response. Maybe you are correct. Thanks again. 0
