Canon eos 1ds markII
Hello
I have two eos 1ds markII bodies that I am still fond of. C1 3.7.9 has been really great together with the latest, latest Powerbook G4 (100 gb 7200) but it is time to upgrade. Am thinking of a new Macbook pro 15". My question is;
what OSX system and C1 version goes well with my Canon bodies. Will a solid state drive work well? I want to shoot tethered (firewire 400) and will also use one or two Lacie rugged 500gb (firewire 800).
Thanks
Johan

The latest OS (10.6.5) and Capture One (6.0.1) versions are higly recommended.
A solid state drive should work just fine as will any fast firewire drive (800 is better).
Shooting to a network folder however is NOT a good idea due to the communication speed.0 -
You will have to get a firewire 400-800 converter as the new macbooks have no firewire 400 they only have 800
But apart from that all works great and very fast.

Just as a heads up... The new Canon SDK no longer supports this camera "officially". Although the camera may work to an extent, because Canon has decided to no longer support the device we can no longer continue to support it in Capture One 6 software.
Please reference the release notes.

But it should still work, the older 1DS does work as far as i know... 0 -
Thanks everyone for your input.
Would it be better to go for 10.5.8 and C1 version 5 something?
What did work well before C1 6.0.1?

Johan,
I have EOS 1DS Mk IIs. If you plan to shoot tethered, there is a trick. I am still using 10.5.8, so this may or may not affect you. The camera would never connect. I would get a pop-up window "connecting to camera ..." but it would never connect. Make sure there is no card in the camera, and when the connecting window pops up, fire a frame and it will usually connect.

Are you using C1 6 or 5?
Up until now I have been on 10.5.8 and 3.7.9. When shooting tethered I start a bit slow, we can watch the previews without any hassle. As you know, the buffer of DS MarkII is not great (11?) but it works if you hold back a bit. I would say 6 seconds until you see a perfect preview.
When you start to shoot fast, 1 frame per second, you can go on for a bit and then either back up or pull the firewire out of the camera and shoot to the card. Not ideal, but there you go...
I have seen so many issues with Canon cameras and different C1 versions, makes me a bit scared. Does it depend on which Canon camera you shoot with or is it to do with USB/ Firewire/ SDK?
Either I go for 10.5.8 and 5.0.2 with my cameras or get a new camera system with everything updated,
Snow Leopard, C1 6. Or go on with 10.5.8 and 3.7.9 and a new Macbook Pro...

If you can try both versions of C1 (6.x and 5.x) before making a decision. Just because Canon says that the camera is no longer officially supported in their latest SDK doesn't mean that it no longer works or works worse than before (5.x). It could actually work better as a side effect of improvements for other Canon cameras...
My comments are about for the Canon SDK included in C1 6.0.1 of course, in the future your mileage may vary.0 -
I'm running 10.5.8 because I can't give up CO 3.79. I like everything about the workflow it provides. However I have installed CO 3.79 on Snow leopard and the only thing that does not work is processing to jpeg. It will yield an image with only fluorescent magenta and green. With the exception of getting the EOS 1ds to connect (see my earlier post) it appears the camera is compatible with both 5.2 and 6.0 running on 10.5.8. Just realize your 1ds mk 2 is getting long in the tooth and if it craps out on you, you will be learning a new camera and new software (totally new) at the same time. Hopefully you wont has an art director looking over your shoulder. 0
