Saving Highlights. CS2. Merge to HDR, or Layer Masks?
Which is better for a great tonal range, particularly a range that saves highlights?
I've experimented with both for many hours, and have come to the conclusion that a combination of both works best. My architectural work provides many challenges, especially with window views and newer buildings with vast areas of glass.
• Merge to HDR will provide a rendition of great overall values, with unacceptable shadows and mid-tones. Too flat.
• Applying an image to the layer mask works great for multiple exposure (EV) versions of a processed image. After the mask is made, a shadow/ highlight correction, curve or level adjustment AND blending options work wonders.
• End result: The old fashioned lasso and outlining, in conjunction with both of the above methods, is still the best way to go. More work, better images.
