Capture One 4.8 problems (performance and user interface)
As a longtime Capture One 3 user, I've been evaluating v4 since it's inception. I've even reported my findings in a previous post more than a year ago:
viewtopic.php?f=20&t=5186
In the meantime I was hoping Phase One would address the biggest shortcomings of it's software and delight us with a product that was actually usable, given the many years they had to polish and debug their creation. Apparently, I was wrong.
Even though many user interface problems have been solved, Capture One 4.8.2 still has a couple of issues that make it almost unusable in day-to-day work, which is absolutely unacceptable in my opinion:
1. General slowness of the interface
I cannot, for the love of god comprehend how could a modern computer program be that slow on my reasonably fast PC (Vista x64 SP2, Intel Core2Duo 3.8 GHz, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD4850). Every control, tool and slider is slow and unresponsive, most changes get updated after long waiting and heavy stutters. Capture One v3 on an old Pentium 4 was so much faster and more responsive, there is no comparison (even on Vista).
2. Preview generation and proxy cache not working at all
If I step from one image to the next, even if I step back and forth between the same two images the entire preview is recreated every time, in several visible steps which take about 5 seconds to complete. Why can't CO buffer this preview image after it has actually been created escapes me. With Capture One v3 stepping between images was instant, now it's a slow and painful process on a much faster computer.
3. Mouse wheel image selection has been omitted
I welcomed the user configurable key settings, but just don't get it why Phase One had to kill the mouse wheel as an image selector. Going through a set is so much faster in v3, as you don't have to lift your hands: left is doing the rotation and tagging, right is scrolling through images with the wheel. Now you have to move the mouse and click on the unresponsive interface to select and image (which even fails sometimes).
4. No way to set default camera profile
I might be wrong on this, but so far I was unable to find a way to assign a custom ICC profile to my camera. As I use Magne Nilsen's excellent color profiles in v3, which are compatible with v4, I would really appreciate not having to apply it to every image in a set every time.
My list is far from being complete, but these four issues slow my workflow down so much that I cannot recommend the purchase of v4, and have to start looking for a different RAW developer for our new cameras.

This being a user forum...PhaseOne probably won't reply
1...dunno,,,seems slower over a network than a local drive, but only slightly here. Once loaded, there is no rela lag on toolset. V64, QuadExtreme, 8 megs RAM here, but I don't belive V4 is really optimized for 64 bit just yet. Setting UAC in Vista, staying current with Radeon drivers, and defragging drives manually has visible benefits here, But it's only a bit longer to get the Win 7 update which will incorporate better UAC control. Make write premissions as fast as possible for COne. While loading is slower, overall useage is faster IMHO due to the single tab toolset VS the multiple tabs in 1-3.x.
2. My computer/videocard must be faster, once the folder is loaded there is a slight delay at 100%, (none at Fit-to-Screen) but less than The focus window in 3.x....so V4 wins here.
3. I use the arrow keys, but mouse roll would be dandy for me, good feature request.
4. Search the forum, Paul has given the naming/renaming convention which will make your Magne profile the default if that's your goal....0 -
C1 is no way as intuitive or responsive as 3.xx was, luckily the image quality is still great otherwise I would have moved on to something else by now.
The freezes are what irritate me the most, everything I do seems to have a lag time, sometimes it's very short but often it will hang the whole program, for example, if I open few hundred pictures then select and batch rename them, I guarantee this will hang C1 every time!
Another quirk is, if I again select a few hundred pictures and apply say sharpening setting to them all, this will take forever to complete? I used to think C1 had hung, but if left long enough it will actually apply the changes, it just takes a long time to do it.
There are lots of niggly things about C1 which I hope will one day be fixed, I do get the impression though, that it was released without really being ready!

I agree entirely. I bought C1 because I had formerly had v3 and loved it, and I tried V4 and tested it with some images and noticed superior detail and color response in my files vs. Lightroom. Well, I should have evaluated more thoroughly, as the slowness of the interface, especially when dealing with folders with a lot of files, is an absolute killer. There are some wonderful things workflow wise with it, but others drive me crazy. So much so that I only use C1 right now to convert my E-P1 RAW files to DGN and then I deal with the DGNs in Lightroom (Lightroom doesn't support the E-P1 yet). For my Canon cameras, I just use Lightroom.
And, maybe this is in there (please tell me if I've missed it), but I can't find it. Any way to set the output folder to automatically be a subfolder of the folder the source files are in? I hate having to remember to click 'make current folder output' or whatever....and I end up developing files into the folder of the last session.0 -
Some answers to some questions
1. Slowness, probably corrupt session file
Close app
My Documents/My Pictures/Capture One Library
Delete CaptureOne.COL45
Start app.
2. caching, add a folder to Favorite and it will stayed cached
3, mouse, matter of taste, it does make zooming easier, CO3 you could not view images in 100% in main preview. Something is at least driving me many other crazy when going back to old software
4. Many ways to set default profile, has been discussed, best option is by using Styles.
5.. Make current folder out put folder, go to Process tab, click on advance, change Root folder.
6. Process indications for tasks, is being worked on.
Some tips, hope it helps.0 -

I might have to add that my main screen is a 30 inch DELL (with a resolution of 2560x1600), which might be the answer why the initial fit-to-screen preview takes some time to compute. (v3 didn't increase the preview proxy sizes beyond a point.)
This is still no answer however for the lack of caching of this preview image, why the hell does CO have to recompute it every time I switch to an image, even though there were no changes applied.0 -

To expand on Ulf's reply, you can set up recipes under the process tab to mimic 3.x exactly, covered on pages 104 and 105 of the HELP menu manual in the Pro version...but better than 3.x, you can also set up and save different recipes...so you can also have developed files from different image folders go to the same folder if you wish...even if that's a rare need.....0 -

Wow, I did that and since then Capture One crashes the instant I start it. Even reinstall doesn't help. Thanks 😊0 -
This is of course normally not the case, software will promt you to select a session file or create a new, what must have happened is that a corrupt file was selected?
Delete that file, start and choose to select to create a new session file.
Just in case, contact support ASAP and we will have you flying again.

Thank you Ulf, process indication for tasks would be very helpful.
I find this amazing that so many compliment CO's image quality, and granted it is incredible as they deserve the credit, but in same breath they criticize the speed of the program. To me it just stands to reason that CO uses far more complicated algorithms to get the image quality we praise them for thus using more processing power. I have tried many other RAW products, and although there are others that are a little faster, none of them can compete with CO's image quality. I for one side with image quality all the time.0 -
I have to say it's preposterous that Phase One has decided to EDIT and CENSOR the subject of my thread instead of answering and dealing with the issues.
What comes next, the deletion of threads that dare to mention problems in the software?
OMG WTF LOL to be concise.0 -
Like any place there is house rules, please follow them.
Rules are top most in every board.
When writing a subject, you write what ever is the subject of the thread and not venting frustration as a subject.
For us to remove that single line (and only that line) is hardly preposterous but more an obligation.
It has sad before and dare being said again, it is a user to user forum, if you want answers from us, then contact us, information has been give several places and last time in my post a little further up.0 -

Although I disagree with your assessment that my subject line was venting, I will abide by your rules and rename the thread accordingly.[quote="Ulf" wrote:

So far I was unable to find any official channel to contact Phase One about my experiences with your trial software. Unfortunately, in the current state of the software (as stated in my original post) we will not license it for commercial use.[quote="Ulf" wrote:

I'm thankful for your suggestions, but they are in no way solutions to my problems stated in my OP.
- deleting the session file did not result in any speedup, instead it destabilized CO so it's freezing every other time I launch it (and if it does, only a reboot can solve it temporarily)

- adding a folder to Favorites does not speed up the preview display at all, on screen previews are NOT cached in memory and still take 4-5 seconds to display on a 30 inch monitor
- the mouse wheel image selection is sorely missing (I still don't understand why could not you leave it in the software as an option)
Thanks for the tip about using Styles for setting the default profile, I will try it out.0 -
I see some things never change. I used to have to delete the session file in the older versions too. Why does this continue to be a problem. Very disappointing for a high dollar piece of software.

I have a programmable tilt wheel from Logitech (G5 laser) that make many tasks a breeze. Tilt left or right and I go previous or next photo. Auxiliary button by my thumb and I get auto levels and exposure. Another button and I apply adjustments. I missed these short cuts when I used my netbook while on vacation.0 -
