Confusing Shortcuts in 3.7.5

I am having trouble getting the shortcuts for increasing and reseting exposure, contrast, and saturation, and zooming in to work as they should. They don't work at all unless I also press the shift key as well, which is not part of the listed shortcuts.
Any suggestions why that might be? Using 3.7.5 on osx 10.4.7

  Hello
  
  I think what you are confusing is with a English keyboard layout you will have to hold down shift to get access to "+" and this is why you need to hold down the combination. Option, CTRL, Shift and "+" to up EC.
  As an example Danish keyboard "+" is the key to the right of "0" where by no shift will be needed.
  With - (Minus) you do not hold down shift when the English layout does not require this.

  Thanks. That makes sense. In photoshop, however, to zoom, + is +, without holding shift. Is it just a difference in how the two programs are designed? I am just getting familiar with C1.
