Opening in older version
Its my understanding that I cannot open aversion 8.x session in a previous version of C1Pro such as version 7.x.
If anyone knows any different, let me know.
Further to that, is it possible (IE within License agreement) to have two versions running on the same machine, albeit not concurrently. If so, where can I download version 7.x
Cheers.

You can run two versions on one machine. Your licence for version 8 is good for previous versions too, and the licence is per computer not per version.
There's an archive of older versions here.
You're right that Version 7 won't open a version 8 session file. But there's nothing to stop you creating a version 7 session and adding files to it.
Why do you want to?
Ian
Edited to add that I notice you are in the USA, so you may like to find the equivalent US download link. I knew it existed but I couldn't find my way to it by clicking around on the site, so I googled "Capture One download older version" and that led me right to it.0 -
Thanks Ian3,
I did manage to find the download archives in preparation for a positive answer.
As to why I want to do this: I have a (new)client that is corporate in nature for whom I will act as digitech on a freelance basis. They are stuck on version 7.x. The photographers have no admin access, they have no backup software installed, provide no external drives.
Naturally I would prefer to use my own systems but of course did not want to provide them with a session they could not open. Now that I have confirmed I can run v7.x without sacrificing my latest version I will be able to serve them better.
(the reason for lack of upgrades on their part is bureaucratic and budgetary - corporate 😕 )0 -
I find the inability to open a V8.3.2 session in a slightly older V8 like V8.1 really annoying. This seems to be a new "feature" of V8? It wasn't always like this. 0 -

Edward,
If there have been changes to the underlying technology - for example the database design - for some reason then there will simply be no backwards compatibility available without a backwards conversion option or throwing some data away or both. That can apply to the application as a self contained package or, just as likely, due to some external influence from the operating system manufacturer - to give just one example of many that could be offered.
If new features have been included older versions will not know about them and so not have any ability to work with them.
As I recall there was a change in something at 8.2 that suggested backwards compatibility was no longer possible. I would assume that the change was significant enough that it was considered worth including as a point release rather than waiting for a new version. Therefore it would also seem likely that most people would not wish to stay with the earlier version for any length of time and miss the benefits.
For individuals that situation is probably fine since there would seem to be no gain by delaying and no reason to take a backwards step.
However for anyone regularly interworking with clients or colleagues who for some reason do not update it will indeed be a likely annoyance. In the corporate world of business applications it can be a terrible bottleneck that restricts progress.
In general developers will endeavour to make such changes only at times of "Version" releases but sometimes the changes are required earlier in a development cycle to address a particular problem or add functionality that is great demand - especially when the version is not very long into the product's typical release cycle.
HTH.
