How to emulate Canon DPP USM and NR in C1?
For detailed images such as landscapes, even eyelashes in portraits, I'm only able to get C1's USM to make the detail block like or \"painterly\" for a lack of a better word vs. much more natural USM look as from Canon's DPP. I've tried C1 USM at Soft and Standard, as well as Noise Reduction On and Off and Banding On and Off, but I can't replicate the very nice (IMO) USM of Canon DPP.
Also, DPP alone and or with Noise Ninja, I find do a better job with noise, especially Blue Channel noise in shadows than does C1. C1 for colour noise works okay, but if there are deep shadows, then C1 noise reduction IME needs to ramped up too much to smooth out the bloctch shadow noise it otherwise produces and thus is not my flavour. DPP and Noise Ninja (USM Off, Colour Noise Reduction only) does a much better job, less softness and better shadow noise reduction.
But, I REALLY like the workflow of C1, but find that I'm using it less and less and instead I'm using DPP + Noise Ninja. IME, the USM of DPP is the best I've found and also how it deals with blue channel info. Noise Ninja works very well on colour noise with my tweaked NN profile and it works well on shadow and blue channel noise, but after DPP, I don't usually need to use it.
I just wish that I could figure out how to get C1 to emulate Canon's DPP and DPP with Noise Ninja. For equivalent sharpening, the C1 details look \"painterly\" while the DPP detail is just sharpened?
Any suggestions that I can play with?

Pytlowany,
Here is my 2cents on this issue from Forum Post last Fall....
Sharpening is like Garlic in Cooking, everyone has their own taste, but too much can spoil a dish. The strength of Capture One is that it eliminates the number of softwares used for image preparation, to establish an efficient workflow for your studio. If however you want to use another software for sharpening, then be sure to turn Disable Sharpening on Output in the Preferences.
The Sharpening of images in Capture One can be set in the Preferences as default, or established at the Focus tab. Default settings will be applied to all images upon processing. Once you adjust the sliders for any one image though, and the Default settings are no longer applicable.
Soft Focus is used mostly for close-up facial portraits of subjects because it can hide skin blemishes to some extent, remember the Soft Focus Filter for film?
You should be able to get confident with the Sharpening tools of Capture One so that you do not have to use other software for this task. Test of course, and see what works best for you. Printing of images is typically the best analysis of results.
Hope this helps you out,
Cheers,
k c0
