Have you checked the possibilities in preferences? On the Exposure section of preferences, you can set target levels and you can set "Auto Levels Clipping Thresholds". I have the Shadows in the latter set to 0.00. So it might adjust the black level, but never to the extent of clipping the shadows.

    Arthur,

Have you tried a test by taking the same shot with and without ADL to see how Auto-levels treats each of the 2 versions?

I have no idea how ADL works but I would assume that it compresses the dynamic range of the resulting image - which you may not need to do when processing a RAW image in Capture 1.

The other point, in addition to Ian's observation, is that Auto Levels can be run in two modes.

I find the mode that adjusts the RGB values separately is the most valuable in terms of providing optimum results but then I am using a different camera system and no ADL.

Finally it's probably worth mentioning that this is a User to User forum by intent so if you really want to pursue your enhancement request the optimal approach is to create a Support Case, include "Enhancement Request:" in the title with a brief outline of what the request is for and then describe it in more detail (as you have done here) in the body of the text.

    HTH.

I am sorry for the very late response in this thread, I was travelling abroad.

In the Exposure section of preferences I have disabled target levels, set the auto-clipping shadows threshold to "0.00" percent and highlights to "0.1" percent. My purpose is simply that the auto-levels determines the white level and nothing else. It should keep the black level as-is.

You know, many real-life images simply don't contain any black. I want the software to respect that instead of artificially raising the black threshold. A RGB color like (10,10,15) is much less saturated than (0,0,5).

ADL does indeed compress the dynamic range in an automatic fashion, but *only* if the camera stores the image as a JPG. To the best of my knowledge, the RAW file is simply stored a little bit underexposed if the camera thinks it needs to protect the highlights. I use the feature simply as a protective measure.

    Okay, will do!

    Thanks,
