Please clarify for me

In the neutralizing skintone help page:

"Select a color or area that needs to be less protruding using the color picker"

I don't understand the use of the word "protruding"

Do I select the image skintone first, and correct with the white balance (skintone tab) tool, or select a preset skintone and somehow apply, or what, exactly?

Thanks to anyone for some exposition.

  First, my Mac dictionary explains protrude as extend beyond or above a surface. I think that in the line "Select a color or area that needs to be less protruding using the color picker" protruding is not meant literally but in a sense of too light/dark/saturated/flat or out-of-band in anyway and hence distracting and ready for correction.
  
  After you have selected the skin to adjust with the color picker of the Color Editor, Skin Tone tab (this is a specific color picker), you have a number of controls to adjust that skin color from the Color Editor's Skin Tone tab. Note that the Color Editor's Skin Tone tab has slightly different controls than its Advanced tab, and is better aimed towards skin tone control.
  
  By the way: neglect the image on the help page in that section. It refers to the Skin Tone white balance, a different tool.
