solution handling NEF that are inproperly read in COP
Hi there,
To all for whom this still may be of concern.
I had and have trouble with NEF-files that are either not seen by COP, or are read wrongly - only a part of the pixels is recognised.
It concerns files that should be readable with COP: Lossless compressed 12 and 14 bit of supported camera's. It may concern only a few files out of a directory of 100, or up to 60 %.
On the topic viewtopic.php?f=52&t=16963 it was told that this would be due to saving wrongly in Capture NX2. A solution is presented: rewrite in Capture NX2. But I found also unedited photo's would show problems (not in Lightroom, nor in Capture NX2 thought). I had this problem with version 7 and 8 and stopped looking. With version 9, I didn't reproduce the issue for new photo's from 2016, so I made the step to COP 9, but I just found out this month, that it still exists, also with new photos.
The reason I still don't know. However, this could be due to importing with Nikon Transfer, which was I think to remenber was experienced with Apple Aperture? I used Transfer to simultaneously batch rename the photo's to date and time until this week. This can be done otherwise easily.
Enfin, I found that the solution mentioned in the other topic is ok, for both unedited and edited files. However, I use it with a security step to avoid losing all the photo's when something goes wrong.
Solution using Capture NX2.
For each directory with photo's that can't be read properly.
1) close Capture One Pro.
2) Make a new directory "new directory", within this directory.
3) Make a little batch in Capture NX2 to write all NEF-files (with embedded Capture NX2 adjustments) to the new directory.
File type should be compressed, lossless.
4) Open COP check if all files can be read in new directory.
5) copy the new files from 'new directory' into the parent directory: replace all files.
Be sure that you only copy your NEF, or delete jpeg's copied to NEF afterwards.
6) open COP and explorer and check if all files are now properly read. It may be that you have to reset all adjustments you made to photos that were read only partly COP.
7) delete new directory
Alternative would be to directly rewrite the NEF in a capture NX2 batch without new directory, and trust on the back-up in case something might go wrong. I somehow like being in control.
Other alternative could be that you select only the affected files, which could involve quite some work also, and more concentration.
Possibly this still helps some of you,
Possibly you see a mistake, and help me get a better workflow for this.
Yours, Peter
