Lens profiles

I am new to this forum so if this question has already been answered I apologize for the repetition.

I just bought a new camera for my wife and noticed that there is no lens profile for it in CaptureOne. I looked for someplace to download additional lens profiles but found nothing on the PhaseOne website. Nor could I find the location of the existing profiles on my Mac so perhaps the profiles are not open for additions and/or corrections. So the only thing I could thing to do was to post some questions on this forum.

1) Is it possible to add to the existing profiles already in CaptureOne?
If so, where do I go to get them and how do I add them?
2) If not, is it possible to edit the existing profiles in CaptureOne?
If so, how do I do that?
3) Are there user profiles available? If so, where?
If not, are there instructions about building your own? If so, where would I find them?

In other words, help. There do not seem to be basic profiles for some of my basic use lenses - Canon 70-300 DO, Canon 28-135 and nothing for my wife's new Sony NEX-6/16-50mm lens. I can probably live without the Canon profiles since there are profiles for my other Canon lenses but the pancake lens for the Sony NEX produces raw images that contain a lot of barrel distortion and I would like to fix that or she will not be able to shoot in raw.

    No to all 3 questions. You can select Generic, make manual corrections and then save it as preset. You would probably have to do this at various apertures / focal lengths though.

    It seems strange to me that the selection of lenses available for automatic correction is so small and lacks some very common lenses, but at least I know now that I should not spend any time looking for user profiles.

    I think you will find that it takes quite a lot of effort per lens to create the profiles and for the profiles created to be more meaningful in practical terms than a generic profile. At least that is the way that Phase see the challenge if useful results are to be provided.

    It also means that at least one copy of every lens to be profiled has to be available in the profiling lab. Maybe more than one copy over time as the lenses are 'improved' or simple for quality control assessment.

    This being a User to User forum by intent, although some Phase personnel offer help on a regular basis, the recommendation is to register your request/suggestion for adding a profile for a specific lens as an official and so internally tracked support request. That would offer Phase an opportunity to assess the level of interest in the lens from the user Capture One base and so be able to make decisions about whether and when to try to obtain a copy for test and evalution.

    I'm not sure how one can assess what is a common lens (though one might predict whether a lens new to the market is likely to be commonly used amongst a wide enough sample of customers if you know your customer base well enough) and what is not. You mention the Canon 70-300 DO for example. I have one of those. It is an interesting lens and can produce some pleasing results but has limits. I have never felt a need to seek a profile for it. But then I bought heavily well used (previous owner was a news photographer) and if filled a gap for a while until I moved to . Now I tend to use it only when travelling 'light' since although the lens is not particularly light it is relatively compact. I don't think many people own this lens and I strongly suspect that of those who do very few use it much. I think it might be one of the lenses that is bought but rarely ever used before being traded on. So I'm not at all sure I could make a case for it, for example, to be given a C1 lens profile.

    As for the Compact Camera market (or maybe even phone cameras in the near future) ... who can tell how things will progress? Designing small lenses that rely on software adjustment (the only way that a smll lens can be offered at a cost the market will accept .... or a cost cutting excercise that make the manufacturer more profit depending on your point of view) means that you either have to live with the inbuilt jpg or find another way to process the raw output. Do the manufacturers offer any information and help to third parties for this work? Perhaps at least a free lens loan service? If not, why not?

    Of the thousands of people around the world who buy the Sony Nex combination your wife uses, how many will use it for more than, say, 2 years? How many will be shooting and processing RAW files rather than jpg? How many will be shooting enough volume of shots (that they wish to spend additional time processing) so that time saved on lens correction becomes an important factor?

    This sort of information included with a support request would, I am sure, be very helpful for ranking the possible level of interest for each lens from a marketing perspective.

    Or one could campaign for the manufacturers to be more responsible and responsive for the product support they offer. That might be an even better use of our time if only it was likely to produce results.

    When we decide on which lenses to profile, we look at usage-statistics from Capture One. So the more used a lens is, the more likely an implementation will be. That's also a very good reason to actually allow for usage-stats to be sent to Phase One.

    If you really need a profile, and can spare your lense(s) for 2 weeks, we can mostly likely do a profile for them.
    Profiling is done at our HQ in Copenhagen, Denmark.

    Or Better still, why don't you guys just hire one and do what's is required for C1 to remain competitive, rather than ask your customers to supply their lenses, after all you guys must be financially stable....to support such features.

    Because a lot of times hiring are not possible on the lenses we are missing. Also, hired lenses are not exactly treated well, so we cannot always rely on them.

    We are of course in touch with a lot of vendors, but not all are equally cooperative.

    I don't understand the logic here from Phase One. Being that they are not providing profiles for all new mass production lenses, they are really selling an unfinished product. How much is this software?? You guys can't rent, borrow new lenses as they become available to test them (like everyone else)? Then you suggest we send our lenses to you to be profiled? Perhaps I could also write some code for your quirky version of C1 Pro for free?

    You guys make no sense. Disappointing indeed.

    As I mentioned, you cannot rent every type of lens. Also, no one has promised that software contains all mass produced lenses. In the release notes we note what lenses we support, and you can be sure that we are very actively working on adding more.

    The offer to send in lenses is because some lenses, especially older ones, can be very hard to find, even from the vendors. There is no expenses for the user.

    It's not an 'unfinished' product.
    I don't think I've ever used a lens profile and my images look amazing coming out of C1.
