c1.w Files
I currently use the canon software “Digital Photo Professional†to edit all my CR2 (RAW) files. I was recently introduced to Capture One Pro by another wedding photographer which led me to download the 30day trial version last night. I have playing around with the settings but was curious about a few things.
Reading a few post on this forum I’ve come to understand that capture one writes two files to a cache or temp folder which I believe are c1.p and c1.w files. My understanding is that the c1.w file is the one that stores all the adjustment settings and shouldn’t be deleted or you will lose any corrections made within capture one.
Prior to using Canons Digital Photo Professional I was using Adobe Bridge. If I was to adjust any settings in Bridge, Bridge would then save a XMP file named after the file I was working on example:
Image001.cr2
Image001.XMP
I would like to know if its possible to set capture one to save all the c1.w files in the same folder as the file I will be adjusting. This way I am able to burn my images to a master disk with all my adjustments to my images which will then allow me to re-upload my calibrated shots for future use.

Ok I think I found my answer….. Once I make adjustments to any RAW images I need to save to archive in order to save my working data alongside my RAW files.
Workflow – Selected Capture Settings – Save To Archive.
The only difference to using something like Bridge is that they aren’t the same file name and instead look more like this:
UID0B41CA86D8B31F7B390EE2C3DCE4FAFB.C1w
Few…. Hope a future version betters this process!0 -
The reason Capture One uses the UID hash name is so the work file will be associated with the raw file no matter where it is stored or what it is named. The hash is based off of the contents of the file.
There are pluses and minuses to each system. Capture One's works great when there is just one central storage area for the work files. But when storing the settings along side of the raw images it does make sense to name them similarly.
I believe 4.0 will be storing the settings with the images by default, but I don't know if they'll be getting rid of the hash naming system.0
