Olympus E-510 RAW vs. C1 LE 3.7.7 (file version 3.7.7.223)
Starting research/debug on just-activated Wxx C1 LE received yesterday with SanDisk Extreme III.
Read P1's reply to guitarman's 11Feb2005 post regarding JPEG files visible but not RAW. Same situation for me but with C1 LE configured for the Olympus E-500, since it doesn't have an E-510 option..
Not very familiar with RAW, but presume that .ORF files (paired with same-named .JPG files) are RAW images produced by my E-510, since I optioned the E-510 for RAW.
1. Does C1 LE distinguish between the E-500 & E-510?
(maybe better as "Is RAW format the same in E-500 & E-510?")
2. If so, when will C1 LE reognize the E-510's RAW file?
3. Can I edit descriptors in the .ORF content so C1 LE handles as E-500 RAW?
Thanks!

No, the RAW file format will be different between E500 and E510. Maybe the RAW files of the E410 and E510 will be the same as they both use the same sensor and electronics.
.orf is indeed an Olympus raw file. But it does not mean that all files with a .orf extension are the same (alas).
Since I ordered an E510 as well, I'm also interested in the answer to your second question: can Phase One give an estimate when E510 files can be developed in C1 LE?
And while you are working on that: please try to find a way to get rid of the magenta cast when trying to recover blown highlights if possible (the E410 also suffers from this). It would be very nice if C1 would do this better than other converters.0 -
All Known Issues or Bugs and all Feature Requests for Camera Support are logged to the R&D department.
Developers then decide priority and feasibility in implementing fixes and additions to the program.
Support for these camera and the Bug fix have been logged.

With regard to the magenta cast; this is an issue that affects all cameras to some extent which are based on a Bayer grid sensor with twice as many green sites as red or blue.
The problem is that with more photo-sites the greens get a slightly better dynamic range than the blue or red. So the red and blue clip off at their maximum first when the highlights start to over-expose. If you've ever done any color mixing using RGB, you'll know that FFxxFF where the xx green channel can be any value to just produce various shades or tints of magenta.
It would be a nice feature to add, perhaps to the Exposure tab, to reduce the magenta cast in highlights. It wouldn't have much effect on the rest of the image if constrained to the brighter parts, plus magenta doesn't occur much in nature.
Right now it means a separate trip to a photo editing program to get enough control (at least in the LE version, I've wondered if the color editor in the Pro could substitute values of white if called upon).0 -
yes, color accuracy when recovering blown highlights is potentially a problem with almost any camera, but the Olympus E410 and E510 seem to suffer more from it than other camera's, returning a nasty magenta cast in stead of grey.
I'll have to read up a bit on my color theory... From what I've read so far in the Olympus community, the problem is that the green channel clips before the red and blue channels do.0 -
Thanks to everyone who provided answers and other tidbits of info!
Keith:
Is there an e-mail list for notifiction of updates like added support for the E-510?0 -
Princess,
Updates and Upgrades will always be announced at the main web site.
You can also use the program to search for update under Help.
If you are on Email List for the RAW News, notification of updated will likely be within this newsletter as well.
cheers,
k c0
