CO 3.7.8 Pro can run without problems on a MBP/10.4.11: I have the same configuration. No problems with Nikon D200 NEF (no D300 files here).

I suggest to remove CO from your MBP and reinstall. For removal, you can follow the instructions from PO's web site:

    Hope this helps.

As a side note, be sure when you uninstall to delete all the extra files listed in the article as crashing problems like this are generally related to preference files, batch queue files and caches.

If you are still having troubles create a support case and we can help find the root of the problem.

Hi, i uninstalled all as suggested but in reinstall it still stalls.

Whilst uninstalling i did discover very weird folders in my preferences all with names like

    ¨êê÷òøˇfi††~a|êÿÃê~u`øˇfi

any idea where these may have come from?

I trashed all my preferences at the same time as uninstalling CO.

I have a backup drive pre 3.78 which if i use as a startup launches 3.77 with no issue, preferences folder still has weird folders??

    I have submitted a support case. 😕

    Hi Photobenny
Yeah, when you start digging, you always find more (which might have nothing to do with the original problem). A question that came up is whether you do any regular maintenance on OS X like Repair Disk, Repair Disk Permissions, and the (in)famous Periodic Bash job?
By the way, very good you had a pre 3.7.8 backup drive!

Having now trashed all phase files including C4 and reinstalled for the second time, i can now operate 3.78 with new sessions but when selecting other capture folders it still stalls.

One of my personal favorites (if there are any in computer maintenance). Logged in as user with administrator privileges, run Terminal and give the commands:
    - sudo periodic daily
    - sudo periodic weekly
    - sudo periodic monthly
    You can combine them:
    - sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
If it is the first time you run either of these commands, make yourself a nice cup of tea. It can take several minutes before the prompt comes back again in Terminal. Your hard disk should sound busy cleaning up.

Note that 'sudo' (super user do) requires a login again in Terminal. There are a lot of 3rd party tools that present this in a GUI program if you prefer to stay away from Terminal. And two disclaimers:
Use sudo commands at your own risk. And I do not pretend nor suggest that this will solve your CO 3.7.8 problem, it's just part of my maintenance routine.

Edit/add: I just looked at AppleJack. I think cleaning caches is perhaps the same.
