Incorrect Printer Driver Issue
Hello,
I am currently evaluating Capture One Pro V6, and I am very impressed, at least I was until I discovered that in the Print Module uses a different and much inferior printer driver instead of the driver I select in my Mac OSX system preferences. Why on earth does Phase One re-invent the wheel and make it square. I use 2 Epson Printers the R800 and R2400 and this anoying feature is present with both printers.
Please let us have the option to use the printer drivers selected in the system preferences. This is a show stopper for me.
Kind regards,
Simon Clifford-Smith

As far as I know, Capture One 6 does not come with printer drivers, but uses the OS X printer as I have installed them in System Preferences.
When I select File, Print (or Cmd+P), the Printer dialog opens. When I click on the Print Settings button, I see the printer(s) from the OS X System Preference (Epson R2880 in my case). The version of the driver matches the installed version in System Preferences (Summary tab) as do all other presets in the printer setup.
So I am a bit confused how you end up with different drivers. How did you determine it?0 -

Hello Paul,
The printer drivers used in system preferences were downloaded using "Software Updates" and work correctly with Preview and Aperture, Lightroom and Photoshop CS4 and CS5. the drivers are as follows:-
Epson R800 Driver version 8.37
Epson R2400 Driver Version 8.37
The drivers used by Capture One V6 look more like CUPS Drivers and I am currently unable to tell version number.
I have a friend nearby who also has this issue. This issue is very irritating as I now have to create 7 more ICC Profiles.
Many thanks for your help.

In the print settings, are you able to click open the drop-down list with your printers as in the image below? It should give you direct access to all printers selected. Maybe you have more drivers in your system (Gutenprint?).

It also gives you direct access to your Print & Fax Preferences (I am on Leopard, on Snow Leopard it might look a bit different).0 -
Hello Paul,
Many thanks for your further help.
I am using Snow Leopard and I don't have any CUPS or Gutenprint Drivers installed on my MacBook Pro.
I get the same view as you show on your last message, however, if I click Layout (3rd Pull Down menu) I get "Print Features" with C1 V6 but I get "Print Settings" with Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture and Preview.
Any help would be much appreciated, as I would love to purchase this upgrade.
Best regards,

Hello Simon,
I fired up Snow Leopard with Aperture3 and CO6 to see what's happening (test system on external disk for me). Well, well, well, what the earth is going on here? I understand your confusion (as I was too) with that Print Features something. But after a second (and third) look, it started to makes sense. CO6 is using the OS X installed drivers, and using (custom) profiles). I know, it looks strange. Here is how:
First you select a Color Profile. This will activate ColorSync control instead of Epson's. Set your rendering intent and BPC.
http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h366/Paul_S57/CO6_PrintDlg10.png
Next, create a preset and save it. Go to Printer Features in the 3rd drop-down list.
http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h366/Paul_S57/CO6_PrintDlg11.png
Next, go through the feature sets General 1 - General 9 (or what number your printer has). All settings you can set here are related to the Epson/Snow Leopard 8.37 drivers (as of today). In General 1 the Media Type is important.
In General 2 I pay attention to Print Quality and High Speed

In General 4 I set the Color Settings to Off, to prevent the print from doing color management. As you can see, these settings are familiar with those from other programs.

Confusingly, this question comes back in my General 7 page, Color Matching. On my General 9 page, there is again an item on media type. I feel that some choices should disable others, as in Aperture and Photoshop. I feel this kind of sophistication is missing, but you should be able to get first class print results. I hope this helps.
Note: Save your preset intermittently while you go through the feature sets but for sure before you hit the Save button.0 -
Hello Paul,
Many thanks for your very thorough investigation. I have just created an ICC Profile using the 8 Page driver settings and the results are very good, but no better than printing via Apple Preview with the single page driver settings.
I have to say that I don't like having the Page Size incorporated in the preset and I can't understand why Phase One, a company that has a very limited number of Design Engineers (Their own words) has to re-invent the wheel when the standard system drivers are now very good. Why have a simple single window dialogue when you can have 8 or 9 confusing and sometimes contradicting settings.
Anyway, many thanks for your help.
Kind regards,

I am surprised that nobody else has issues with the new Print Feature in Capture One V6. Why can't we use the standard system print dialogue.

Hi, welcome to the forum and Capture One. From your description in your post it is difficult to understand:
a) what it is you want to achieve
b) what actions you performed
c) what the result is from the respective action
Starting with a), do you want to print from CO6 to your Epson 3800, do you want to make a print screen from your monitor and print that on your 3800, or do you want to proof read the output for the 3800 on your screen?0 -
Many Thanks to all involved at Phase One for resolving this very frustrating problem. I am very very pleased and I will now start using Capture One Pro again.
Kind regards,
Simon Clifford-Smith
