Upgrade from Expressions to MediaPro on OS X Yosemite

No issues per se, but it is a one way upgrade. Phase One Media Pro creates a brand new catalog format totally incompatible with Expression Media or iView.

Catalogs are larger due in part to more features like the ability to be larger than 2GB. You could merge some of those legacy catalogs.

I'd question investing more time in a program that is all but discontinued. Sadly it may be time to move on from iView/Expression Media/Media Pro. Push your metadata into your assets or export the data as XML and look for software that is actively being supported and regularly updated.

I posted this separately in case Phase One deem it inappropriate.

Robert makes some good points, but it could also be argued that in your case (several old legacy catalogs), upgrading could in fact be a smart, cost-effective decision to extend the life of your catalogs for several more years since the upgrade cost is relatively small and your users wouldn't have to learn a new software program. If you decide later to move to a different solution, you could still do so.

I just recently made the decision to upgrade (after many years of hesitation) because I bought a new camera that isn't supported by Expression Media. At a relatively small cost, Media Pro will at least afford me a few more years of use of the catalogs in which I have invested so much time to develop.

Maybe then stay on Expression Media as see if it works. Personally I'd just be reluctant to invest more human resources into it. Thankfully iView made it relatively simple to migrate to another DAM when the time comes.

Again, Robert's advice is sound. I have been using Expression Media successfully on OS X Yosemite for several weeks with no issues, and I expect that the upcoming OS X El Capitan will be no different, so unless you plan to add images from newer/unsupported cameras, EM might work for quite some time. The one issue I've found with EM-to-MP conversions is the wonky support for manual sort order in Catalog Sets, but it isn't a show stopper. (See the other forum thread for details.)

Thank you, syncrasy and roberte, for your comments.
I can appreciate all of your arguments. We are looking at Extensis as a long-term solution, but of course that is a much more complicated transfer with a much higher cost. Trying to determine when to take the plunge - not having support is a challenge at times.

I tested MP on Yosemite - putting through our typical workflow from asset collection through production - and did not experience any major issues. Seems to work with the same file formats, and same metadata fields with drag & drop, basic editing, and image conversion options. The biggest challenge seemed to be getting used to the new look/layout. A few data field changes such as: "Caption" is now "Descriptor" and "Event Date" is now "Date Created," etc. Functionality seemed the same, with a few additions. Of course, background compatibility with the OS has improved - we have experienced some issues related to that; crashing, etc. Didn't notice that during my tests.

    Thanks again for your feedback.

The different field labels might simply be due to a different default preference setting for Field Names in Media Pro. Check Preferences > General, and look at the selection for Field Names. You can choose "Phase One," "IPTC Core," or "Photoshop CS" to control how the fields are labeled. I think if you choose "Phase One" you will see your more familiar field names.

Otherwise, I believe the look/layout is essentially the same as Expression Media except for the (unfortunate) black/dark gray color scheme and the use of the term "Export Annotations" instead of "Sync Annotations."

Thanks - I will give that a try.
