Regarding you first question: the trial is 100% functional for 30 days. It sounds however that you are not running trial mode for either the standard or Pro version but started in DB mode, which is for data back raw files only. You can not edit DSLR files in that mode. To check and repair: go to Help menu, License Information (which should state it is for digital backs only) and hit the button Stop... After you restart the program choose Try...
Add/Edit: Or you run in the proper trial mode but your network share does not give sufficient permissions (from CO's point of view) to edit the images. Result is a 'read only' symbol in the thumbnail of your images. Try opening some images from your local disk.

Regarding you second question on network performance: this can be slow (there has been reports). Note however that when you first open a folder, CO5 generates the proxies (previews) which gives a slow performance, but first time only.

Thanks for the tips. Turns out the directory on the server wasn't writable by the user I was logged in as. The files were writable so I was getting an eyeball on the thumbnails and that led me to believe that the permissions were okay. But C1 couldn't create its subdirectory for the cache (CaptureOne/cache) so I wasn't able to do anything with the images.
