What are the benefits of OpenCL GPU's?

I've been looking through the forums and reading what I can, but I don't completely understand what the use of them is for? Is it just used to delegate which tasks are prioritised?

Can anyone let me know?

  At a very high level view, OpenCL is what's letting software make full use of GPUs as opposed to your CPU rendering the graphics.

  I'm using an iMac 27" (late 2009) and would like to upgrade to a machine that can take advantage of OpenCL.
