    I agree.

I fully understand that there may be a need to create a new technical architecture for the application to allow easier maintenance and development. But that does not require a fundamental change to the user interface. A new version could have been built that looked just like a logical development of 3.7 but with completely different program code.

So we need to separate the rebuild of the software - essentially good as it should allow PhaseOne to be more responsive to changes to cameras, backs etc from the changes to the user interface, bad, which has created a separate product.

Adobe did not turn PS into Lightroom (which is what PhaseOne has done) but created a separate product and I would bet that much of the code is shared. We know they both use Camera Raw but I would expect a lot of the other functions are driven by the same code.

As a former software developer I understand the technical needs but they should not drive the user experience - that should come from users and proper market analysis. V4+ feels very technically led.

    I also agree!

V3.7.6 with the updated browser/management features of v4.5 would have been perfect! I used C1 because it was FAST in a production environment (weddings) and has the BEST IQ (highlight rendering and "natural" colour rendering) of any RAW converter I have tried.

I do feel sympathy for the developement team, who I'm sure put their heart and souls into the new version! But, for me at least, it's going to be a necessary "downgrade" since v3.7.6 doesn't support my new Nikon D700! Still, even C1 4.5 is a better proposition than Nikon Capture NX2 or Abobe Camera Raw.

    Cheers.

    Peter.

    Totally agree!

I have gushed to everyone in this industry about the amazing processing and file managing of C1, that is until now. There are so many things that were unique to C1 v 3 that were totally abandoned in v 4.5. To name a few: No more fine adjustment on the horizon correction unless you type in the numbers (that slider is a joke), no more quick tag, no more zooming out of an individual file in the viewer, etc. Maybe these things exist but they're buried and to me the whole thing lost it's intuitive nature. It's like Toyota making a new Corolla and switching the clutch and brake and than deciding to add a feature that allows you to go 60 mph in reverse, there's absolutely no point! Why did you fix things that weren't broken?! Complete interruption of my workflow. At the very least I wish they would continue to update v 3 to include latest cameras.

I'm trying to be open minded and kind of force myself to use capture on, but the interface is such that many of the strengths of the old 3.x versions is gone in my opinion.

For example the lousy, lousy implementation of cropping. Why do I have to have so many mouse clicks? It used to be that one clicked and held the crop icon for a while and the aspect ratio appeared to select. Now I dont' have that. I have to click in one spot and then also slide all the way over to the developement tab, select the crop there AS WELL and then the aspect ratio.

Why, why, why ... are the icons so small?

Why, why, why ... is it not possible to custom build a tab which would have all the essentials the photographer needs most of the time in one panel.

Who thought that not being able to exclude jpg's from the view was a good idea? I mean you can't manipulate them! I shoot raw and jpg for everything and am not going to change due to the fact that my powerbook is so much more efficient at the track when there is a small jpg so nothing has to get rendered. But then to have to look at these, wasting space in the viewer and time ... that is hard to comprehend.
(is that also like that in the pro version?)

This mousing around is killing me and making the program slow.

For myself, and I think this is a common missed lament, its not the speed of coversions that is important - it is the speed of the iterface, where it is fast and efficient to get the tune up of the shots done quickly, to throw the shot into the que. How long it spends in the que hatching is of little importance. The files process amazingly fast with 4.5 but the interface makes me slow. I lose!

I'm trying to be open minded because I've loved C1 over other programs so much for so long. But with the 4x changes, this feels like a clone of LIghtroom. A poorly done clone. I know often its a matter of getting educated in the new ways ... something I've not done to my satisfaction yet. But I want to work fast! With 4000 shots in a job ... it makes a big difference, an essential difference. So far Lightroom is working much better for me. I can now get things done quite quickly with it and it has the database features as well. That is hard to beat. Sad to say ... I've moved over to LR and now only tinker once in a while with my old standby. I am aware that perhaps I've not learned its ways and so perhaps I'm not doing V4 justice, but for now ... lightroom is it.
I don't think phase one can beat adobe at adobe's game. Bring back a very streamlined interface that simply gives basic but very quick to work with tools. Please!

I have hope that as often is the case, that Phase one is doing their best to listen to how us old fashioned customers like to work ... and slowly will respond. But with what I've seen so far ... I do feel a bit silly crossing my fingers still. ☹️
